are you making sure that all the tabs are going underneath into their proper slots? you kinda have to lift and push at the same time.

when you take the console off, turn it around and along the sides you will see metal clips surrounding a plastic tab. If you add and take the panel out numerous times, the metal clips can get "precrunched" to the point where they won't expand into their slot when putting it all back together. With the console removed, take a small flat head screwdriver and gently bend the metal clips outward.

When you go to put it back in, make sure you do the top portion first. You'll slide it towards the windshield, and you will feel it lock into place. From there do the side mounts and then line up the bottom 2 screws under the headunit and reinstall the 2 self tapping screws.

I had the same issues recently as I had to add a similar wire for an aux. device, and doing the above absolutely solved it.

are you forreal? My 03 console only has plastic on the panel, and it rattled like crazy. I just stuffed a bunch of foam under there to keep it quiet, but never since day 1 did I see metal clips at the top of my console (where the three gauge pods are)

at the top section there are only plastic tabs...they dont hold anything, they are just guides

the metal clips run along the side of the center console - there are 4 as I recall (2 per side). Then at the bottom there are self tapping screws (1 per side)
