Well, I wish I could help - but, let me be the first to flame ya That thing is filthy.

Seriously, I haven't seen anything on rattles in that location - inside a welded panel.

I'm in the same boat as you are except mine creek on the opposite side. The problem on mine existed after installing the Nismo V1 spoiler. It doesn't really bothers me bec. I only notice it during when I'm driving the first 5 min. and it slowly goes away. I suspect it's my rear hatch shock on the passenger side.

I had a rattle coming from the hatch area I stopped by putting small pieces of double sided tape/velcro in between the the glass and the third brake light cover. Been quiet every since. Might want to give that a try, or at least hold the brake cover as you go over places that cause rattles. I know you pointed out the areas in red, but maybe it only "apppears" to be coming from there. Just a suggestion.

I posted a thread about the same thing last year. I was having the same problem and I couldnt figure out what part of the hatch exactly was rattling. Took it to Nissan like 5 times cause my 06 is still under warranty. They never found anything. Ended up getting $3000k back from Nissan thanks to my lawyer hah. I ended up placing a small folded up piece of cloth where the trunk lid meets the panel on the car. I dont hear it anymore.

I just recently fixed a rattle I had in my trunk so I'll throw some ideas into the mix. When you remove the hatch lining/panel, there are 3 types of clips or retainers that get popped out: the orange ribbed christmas tree ones, the big white pin ones, and the rectagular metal clips that use the rectangular cavities you see in your third picture. My rattle was caused by a orange tree one that didn't have its base in the lining, but was still inside the trunk lid. By removing the panel, and making sure every clip (that was left) was properly inserted in the panel before snapping it back into the car, my rattle/squeak (started to sound like a cricket at almost every speed) went away.

If yours is coming from the area you have circled, perhaps at some point someone popped the panel off and one of the rectangular clips broke apart and lift pieces in the welded panel. So first check to see if you still have every clip. I'm not sure how you would fix that shy of taking the whole hatch lid off of the car and shaking around like when you lose a pick inside an acoustic guitar.

I guess you could also try and wiggle the hatch strut pivots to see if they are loose.

So I've tried the cloth in between the hatch trick and the rattling persists.

Last resort for me is to Drill a hole into the panle behind the hatch and spray some expandable foam(Great Stuff) into it.

I'm about to sell this car if I cant fix this issue! ARGH!

Update: I finally fixed this issue and I've narrowed down to the following -

1 - It is in between the 2 metal panels
2 - it's either a broken weld inside or a nut or something

How I fixed it -

1 - I pulled out the L shaped panel( the one that touches the 3rd brake light)
2 - Then I used something called "Great Stuff" and sprayed it in between the 2 panels via the holes where the plastic panel cover clip into.

This is the stuff that I used is called "Great Stuff" which is an expandible foam used for filling gaps and insulating windows.
