Default Repainting bumber question due to chips/scratches

Stupidly I bumped a curb twice in my aparment which left a couple deep scratches on the one side of my front bumber. I also just came back from a road trip this past weekend and noticed that now I have a few rock chips in different spots on the bumper. My question is, if I have the entire bumper repainted (can get it done for around $300 at a reputable shop), will it hold up well? I know factory paint probably is the most durable.

Your best bet is to ask in your regional forum what some reputable shops are. Then, give them a call or stop by and get an estimate.

The paint will hold up fine.

$300 is low. I was told by two shops it wouuld be $900.

Also, I was told by shops paint would not hold up as well as original. I'm curious to see what others here say.

expect to pay 700 to 800 dollars - make sure they spray the bumper off the car.

the paint will be more prone to stone chips because it will not be as strong as the original paint. I would suggest getting a clear bra after you re-paint the bumper. I believe you will have to wait 30 days for the paint to cure before having a clear bra installed.

I'm not trying to be cheap at all. I just called 4 of the main paint specialists I saw in the Sherman TX phone book and prices ranged between $325 and $475. Maybe Ill check the regional forum for shops just to be safe. Is there anything I'll want to specifically ask a shop before deciding to use them?

I paid $500 at the best shop in my home town. They did a great job. It's been 3 months and holding up good, but now comes lovebug season.

i had mine repainted under warranty because of some clearcoat issues and it ended up softer than the OEM. i have more rock chips on my front bumper than i can count.
mine's a PPW though so you can't see it very much, thank god. otherwise the OCD part of me would go nuts.

$300 does sound low though, and like someone else said, make sure they take the bumper OFF the car to repaint it. believe me, overspray on your grill or corner reflecters is a *****.

$900 to spray a single bumper??? I'm sorry, that is moon territory. I would laugh and walk out.

I'd say $300 is about right. I paid $800 for my whole 4 piece central 20 kit to be painted, and $350 for my nismo V2 front. The quality was as least as good as Nissan's garbage paint.

For bumpers that require ZERO additional prep (no pesky waves or pinholes present, PERFECT fitment) most shops charge somewhere around $300. Trust me, I am going through that these days with all the estimates I am getting on my Shine V2 front. I have received 3 so far and alas, none are nearly as low as that.

Your OEM bumper is 100% perfect, sans those chips. The only additional step for the shop would be stripping off the existing clear+base, and I don't foresee that costing that much extra.

I say if your shop is well-reputed in the area (check with local members) and provides a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship, go for it!

350 for your Nismo V2??

I paid about 1100 for paint and install of my V2, if someone quoted me 350 I would laugh and say no thanks I can spray paint it myself.

Oh I wish. Re-read...

Depending on the condition of your V2, $1,100 could be justified. I have no clue without actually seeing it before paint.

I would question the shop, work, and materials used if your paying 300. I had someone back into the front my car six months ago. I took it to a top notch/recommended body shop and they didn't have to re-paint the whole bumper. They blended into the area of the scratch. They did an outstanding job but this process costed me 300 dollars. I got a quote from the dealer to paint the whole bumper for 850.

Bottomline when it comes to paint, prep and bodywork you always get what you pay for.

Thanks for the input. The main thing all of the shops told me was that they needed to remove the bumber, sand down the chips and strip the clear coat off. They all said a 3 day process

Just made one more call to another well-known shop. They quoted me $255 to remove bumper, strip it down entirely, repaint and clearcoat it....with a 1 yr warranty. 2 day process. I think I'm gonna go down there and talk to the guy. can't beat that price!

for those that are used to paying well over $500 to paint a bumper... i feel terrible for you. sounds like a bad case of inflation to me. Figuring the paint straight from the factory to paint a bumper will run you around $80. If your paying $800... who should be the one feeling stupid? Acquired skill or not, inflation on a price to make you feel like "your getting what you pay for" should be within reason. $1200 to paint and mount a bumper is as bad as buying potenza's from the dealer at $250 each.

I would stay far away from any shop that won't offer a lifetime warranty, or what I would consider "lifetime". After all, OEM paint isn't guaranteed to last forever either. But one year is just much a joke as paying north of $500 for any bumper requiring little to no additional prep.

Yeah I don't understand where people are getting these insane prices... I have a very reputable guy who does all my body work/paint and does amazing work... and charges a little over the cost of materials for me.

Seriously... 800+ for a bumper? I would never even think of doing that.
