Question flimsy gas tank cover?

hey guys, i have 2008 base model and i was very worried about the gas tank cover (not the gas cap aka twist cap). I got a chance to compare mine with my buddy's who has an 2006 and his feels a whole lot sturdier than mine.

Does anyone else have an 08 and feel the same way i do? if so have you compared with other Z models, i have not had a chance to compare to another 08.

I'd like to know in case its my car alone so i can take it to the dealer, if its the 08 model in general then I may just end up buying an aftermarket gas tank cover. Thanks in advance.

Ditto for '05. At least Nissan's consistent.

I might be buying an aftermarket one after all.

have any of you guys compared to other year models because i wouldnt of made a post had it not been that i think my friends 06 feels a whole lot better.

when i say flimsy i mean its at the threshhold of broken and cheap craftsman. i think im just paranoid though, i just dont see why nissan would have changed a good thing. unless my buddies car was a fluke in which the accidentally made it better (highly doubtful)

My 2007 is the same way. I use the palm of my hand to latch it after fueling. I'm afraid I might twist it and snap it off if I don't. People probably think I have some kind of impairment if they're watching.

Are there actual reports of it breaking off? I think it's fine...

lmao ya i know, i see myself doing the same thing, its bull **** that i feel there is a "trick" to closing a gas cover. o well, in light of all the responses lets turn a bad thing into a good thing.

anyone seen some cool looking fuel doors they recommend, i havent been able to find any decent ones. I like to buy things people can vouch are good quality items. thanks again and thank you for all the replies guys.

Not only is it flimsy but in my case it seems like it doesn't fully flush with the panel, its a bit raised on the edge if you look at it closely. Also in my gas cap (the actual screw cap) the little plastic screw that holds the string to the panel, broke a few months after getting the car. Now i have that string just dangling around and have to literally take off the cap and put in on top of the pump all the time....wonder how long before i forget to put it back on and drive off without it..

There was a thread about this a long time ago, how its not flush with the car and its flimsy as sh*t.

I thought I remember reading you can tighten the screws or bolts on the inside the help fix it...not really sure though

On a side note, mine is the same exact way.

When I had my '03 (pre-order delivered in August '02) it felt flimsy, but it help up fine till the car was killed in June '07. My '07 cap feels exactly the same. It's going to be fine if you don't abuse it.

Default Mind readers

You guys must be mind readers...I posted this exact problem over in the interior/exterior thread yesterday...Just got my 08 touring 3 wks ago. Went to file up and noticed right off the bat when I shut the door that it did not line up correctly. There is a gap (about 1/8 inch) where the lid sticks out more than it should...I was hoping there was some kind of adjustment but could not find anything in the owners manual..

Im starting to think that the fuel doors are all generic because i cant really find anything that is exclusive to 350z which kinda makes sense cause most cars have more or less the same thing as fuel doors.

i keep coming up with alot of fuel doors for american cars aka ford mustangs f150's etc etc since its more common in those cars.

My '03's isn't flush either, figured it was just from stupid gas station attendants (can't pump your own gas in Oregon) yanking on it, but I guess its a universal thing.

It's a piece of crap.

There's a thread from a couple of years ago about an aftermarket fuel door in metal, kinda like the Audi TT's. Looked good IMHO, except it had a chrome finish. (I'd prefer a brushed aluminum finish.)

Surprised more peeps haven't gone that route.
