DAMN THE TIRE SHREDS!!!!!!!!
Welp....
Today I nailed a large tire shred off of an 18-wheeler and it f'ed up the protective black plastic piece under the front of the car that connects to the front bumper. I am debating taking the car to the dealership to have it replaced or just taking it off and not bothering with it.
Have any of you guys had a similar experience and perhaps know the cost to have it replaced? Is this piece completely necessary to have or can I do without it?

I hit tire shred in my DD MKV GTI (Had only 1500 miles on it). I had no way of avoiding it and it cracked my front bumper, threw my left fog light sailing down the highway and left my splash guard (black plastic piece you are talking about) hanging under my car. I called my insurance agent and he told me that this is covered under insurance and as long as I pay the deductible I can get it fixed. Granted, I have a bit more damage then you do, but at the same time, you said the front bumper bracket broke, so you might need a whole new bumper.
I was told since the object was not attached to the ground, but a moving object (unlike a tree or a guard rail) I am not at fault and my insurance will not go up.
Just my 2 cents. I was not expecting it to be covered.

You do not need the front diffuser and it will make it easier to change your oil. The only thing it does is reduce vibration shaking from the lower side on the bumper and is a basic guard for the oil pan but you do not need it unless you have a larger bumper like my V3.
