Default Latest on my Z getting painted...

Long story short... Z was keyed at Wal-Mart and is now at the shop being repaired. So I am getting my taxes back and figured I would call up to the body shop to see how much an extra coat of clear would be on the Z and I would pay outta pocket for it. The shop manager said he has enough from the insurance to go ahead and put me a total of 3 coats of clear on the Z and for me not to worry about it. So I don't know what it's going to look like with 3 coats of clear but I hope it turns out good. Is 3 coats alot or is that about normal? I know nothing about body repair.

sucks that your car got keyed.
people just can't leave other people's stuff alone.
I think 3 coats of clear should look fine...but don't quote me on that.

as long as they are wet sanded between each coat it will look good... otherwise it could be multiple layers of orange peel...

3 coats isn't a lot for "aftermarket" paint jobs. I doubt you'll be able to tell any difference, for the most part its more for protection than looks. Sure, a lot of clear CAN have a better appearance if done layed down and sanded between coats properly, but for the average paint job you won't even know the difference. I did 7 or 8 (can't remember) coats of clear on my last paint job (different car). While I don't have the same car with the same paint job with less layers of clear, I'd feel confident in saying it probably wouldn't have looked any different.

Hell, the guy you spoke to probably just said he would give you 3 coats of clear because you won't know the difference.

3 coats is actually the norm for most paint shops

Prob so... I have already decided if the paint looks like crap I wont complain about it I will just take the car and trade it since I owe less than it's worth. I hate saying that but I have never had a car repainted before and I hope I chose the right shop to do it. Thanks for your opinions guys. I will post pics when I do get it back. Wish me luck!
