Default Painting my roof black

I have a 2008 PPW, and want to have my roof painted black. I took it to a body shop who said that they would not do it(if they were me) because he has to roll the molding back and is afraid of breaking the C-Pillars as well(400$ a piece if they break).

But why is it that I see all of these PPW's or any color for that matter with black roofs. Is there an aftermarket part that I have yet to find?

Please enlighten me...

I wouldn't paint it b/c its not easy to "undo." If I were you I'd get a vinyl overlay, that way when you don't like it anymore you can remove it and just clean it ( glue etc. thats left behind ). Also if you like C/F, you can get an overlay, those look great only if you have other c/f on your car..... good luck and post pics if you do anything.

-vinyl = Bats overlays
-C/F = Mastergrade

There are carbon fiber roof overlays, I also have seen vinyl overlays on ebay and bluebat or you can go to another body shop that Iam sure will have no problem painting it.

Have your bodyshop talk to some glass replacement guys, any experienced glass guys can remove the pillers within about 30 minutes. Of course, so should the bodyshop guy so I would definitely start looking elsewhere for your painting needs if he can't take pillers off without breaking them.

Vinyl overlay is the best. I found a guy on craigslist that was selling a 60 x 40 sheet for about $70.. I did the install in my garage and absolutely loved it. I see your in the Mid-A I have the guys information pm me if you want it.

The overlays dont look half as nice as painting it. I would take it to another body shop. The pillars are pretty easy to remove. Just takes some patience.

Paint gives a better finnish than the overlay, you wont get the look of it being glass like from the overlay...

Take it too another paint place....

I ordered some black overlay... too good of a deal to pass up, so I will try it on, see how I like it and then if I dont, paint it.

Bodyshop didn't have any concerns about mine. Sounds like its time to find another body shop.

Find another body shop. They should be able to paint it with no problems. I just had mine done the other day. Should be ready for pick up tomorrow.

Its hard to paint the roof, ive seen a lot of roof jobs for the Z where paint is flaking off at the edges.

I would recommend vinyl or cf overlay.

thats a lot of work to do that job.
1. uninstall a pillars
2. prep roof by sanding
3. primer
4. resand
5. spray
6. clear coat
7. polish
8. reinstall pillars

theres like maybe 40-50 bucks in material but that process took him atleast a full days work to look half decent. 2 days to make it look perfect. and thats with working a full 8 hour shift

so he made like 50 bucks for that much labor.

the roof is a flat surface. so prepping it is not as hard as prepping kits. and the paint shouldnt cost much since it only black. and the clear is just the same clear he used for my kit. so im sure it didnt run him more than 30 bux for the supplies. they are a paint shop and they have most the stuff already.
