Default Fiberglass hood

Was looking around online and saw someone local selling a 350z fiberglass hood. They were asking $300. Looked online and saw a stillen one that sells for $629. What are the major differences between fiberglass and carbon fiber? Does that sound like a good deal, to good to be true? How much would a local shop charge to install that you guys think? Thanks for any input.

Sean

EDIT: Just got an email from the guy. He says he purchased it from here

http://jdm-lugnuts.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=4262587

So I see Stillen selling a fiberglass good for $629 the above link for $300 and I found another site selling an Aero fiberglass good for $1300. Differences? I got him down to $200 and I told him I'd get back to him tomorrow.

stillen is a respected company that uses good quality material for its products. That may be the reason why the fiberglass hood is so cheap, and the reason why the guy is selling it. It may not fit well or be sh&t.

Carbon fiber is both stronger and lighter than fiberglass.

Based upon the link, I have no idea how good or bad the quality of that hood is. I'd pass.

90% of the carbon hoods on the market are fiberglass...with a carbon overlay to give them a carbon look. The surely are not any stronger than all frp (all depends on the quality of the frp) and certainly not lighter. The Seibon vented hoods for example, weigh more than stock, whereas some of the FRP hoods, actually weigh less

At $300, or even $600, the biggest issue is fitment. Who wants to deal with a hood that has to be shimmed, or worse, to fit? Been there, done that - it ain't worth the price of admission

If the hood you are considering is local, go take a look at how it is installed on the car, and decide for yourself if the fitment is good enough for you.

There are tons of replica companies out there, who replicate anything under the sun - quality varies widely, as do prices. Some even replicate replicas!

You are 19 and in school - why do you want to spend $500-1000 to change to a hood that is likely heavier than your stock aluminum hood?

hood $150
install $50-$100
total - $250 max...

I don't care about weight I'm not racing, I thought for this price it would make a fairly big change in how my car looks. The pics looked fine to me except for the 3rd one, it looked like there was to big of a space, what do you guys think?

The guy sent me some pictures of the hood. Tell me what you think instead of just flamming.

It looks like fitment sucks. Looks wise...I've never personally been a fan of that style, but that is personal preference.

So let me ask you this, do you plan on rolling around with a fiberglass hood that doesn't have paint like that guy did? Because it will cost more than "install $50-$100" to have it painted. Install shouldn't cost anything, absolutely anybody can put on a hood with the help of a friend.

i would not waste my money on fiberglass. from those pictures, the hood looks good from far but fitment may not bother you now but it will later. i wouldnt spend $200 on something that barely fits properly. save your money for a better hood.

That hood looks like it needs paint. The style is cool IMO but the 2 tone i built it from the junkyard civic look is lame. Putting on a fibreglass hood that is heavier than the factory aluminum hood is pretty lame too.

What color is your car? If it's not black, don't forget to add paint to those costs.
