Hate the rear view mirror

Hate the rear view mirror
How many others out there really hate the inside mirror ? The sacrifice of forward vision is way too much. Dangerous in fact. What's visible through the windshield is typically more dangerous to you than what's coming up from behind. I'm 6 feet tall so maybe some of you who are built a bit closer to the ground may not loose as much visibility since you can look out below the mirror better than some of us. The whole thing could be so much smaller with a bit of re-engineering.
I know that a certain amount of the bulk is due to the electronic stuff in there and the auto dimming. But, when you look in the mirror, the actual portion that provides a view out the rear is a very narrow slit. I'd love to see the electronic mounted elsewhere and even a manual dimming mirror.

It's about 9½" wide and 2½" tall at the center point. I'd be glad to trade you mine too You'll probably find it to be a better deal to buy one from the dealer and try it, I believe they were around $75. The part number is 96321-2Y900
I agree with you that it can be distracting as it causes a small blind spot to the right side. You can try adjusting it higher as both ends of the connecting rod articulate. Then you'll probably be looking down out the rear window instead of straight back. I know it took me a while to get the right position and I'm only 5'11".

I also didn't realize that the rod could be adjusted at both ends ( stupid assumption on my part). I pushed the mirror all the way up to the headliner and then tilted it slightly to regain the site out the rear. Ockham's Razor says the simplest explanation or strategy tends to be the best one.
Many thanks.

I know how you feel. The first time I started fooling with it I wasn't sure how hard you could force it because the ends are very tight. You don't want to break it, obviously.
When autocrossing, I push the mirror all the way up so it faces the roof, that gets it totally out of the way for full visibility.

Love mine, never noticed a decrease in vision from it, typically most drivers look forward and are not worried about airplanes dive bombing them (BTW i'm 6'1)
The only prop with mine is that when tracking your car, you can break the mount out of the glass, its heavy and puts a nice load on the mount under high and long G corners.

It's funny how something like that can bother you so much for so long and then one well thought out answer provides a simple solution.

Since I use the side mirrors more, I purchased a drivers side mirror from Australia. Like the passenger side mirror, it is convex. My field of view is much greater now.
It does take a little getting use-to though. Anytime I let someone drive my car it frightens them.
