Default new lights-prototype

old bulbs werent cutting it, so theyve been replaced. LED bulbs, 1 LED for parking light, 2 for turn signal. both under driven untill I can find a better heatsink. once these last a week or 2 on my car to be sure they dont damage anything somehow, Ill offer these for sale. they are simple replacements, as easy as changing a bulb.

on with the pictures, I dont think I need to tell you which is new and which is old.

it was a pain to get this photo, but as you can see, while the old bulb is going off, the LED is already done, a good demonstation of the instant on look of the LED.

few things, first the LED is absolute WHITE, no hint of blue as these photos would lead you to believe. they are pure white, identical to that of the HID bulb.

they also are not as bright as the bulbs, but not as dim as the photos would show, they do not have the wide output of light like a bulb, so the camera doesnt pick up on their light quite the same.

these are luxeon LEDs, hence the light output from 1 or 2 LEDs.

hope you like

also there are no camera tricks, just straight up digital photos(iso200, not a long exposure), no editing to make them brighter or anything.

How much for these and how hard is it to change these bulbs?

you have to partially remove the plastic tire fender peice, not hard at all.

it can be done in about 10 minutes each side. I personally find it difficult to impossible to remove the fasteners without the car being lifted, so I used the factory jack to get some clearance. took out a total of 3 fasteners and 2 screws, pulled the wheel well back, and you have access to both bulbs, twist them a quarter turn to get them out, then the bulbs pull out, and the LEDs pop right in.

Im hoping for 10-20$ each(probably with a pricing dependent on how many you buy). and an additional 5$/each if you want a resistor to stop the "hyper" flash that LEDs cause(this would only be applicable to turn signals). the 5$ isnt my price, thats just what I see premade units for this purpose go for. I never liked the hyper flash, but its actually kinda cool with the LED cause it has no delay.

take note the parking lights are right under 50% power, the amber at about 65%power. Im working on cooling the LEDs so I can bump the current up.

Ares,

How many emitters are you using...just one? You'll need at least 1 sq. inch of flat heat sink for every emitter...possibly quite a bit more if they're running in an enclosed environment. I wouldn't suggest a finned heat sink since there's not many places to put one...you'll havr to go flat (well, formed in some manner, actually, as you won't be able to put a completely flat consuctor behind the LED).

Luxeons are arguably the brightest LEDs out there...I think their latest model, the Luxeon III, puts out like 80 Lumens when powered at 1A...80 Lumens is a beast!

the parking light is 1, the turn signal is 2. no heatsinks yet, which I know is no good. for the parking lot Im just keeping it underdriven for now, at about 150mA thay say 100 is safe, I know djtonium hasnt had any troubles with his and I believe he's running his slightly higher.

for the turn signals I want to use the star emitters, but they were backordered at the time. theres just enough clearance on them to fit on those sockets.

the III and V are awesome, but expensive, hot, and most importantly limited in color. the colors of the III are pretty useless, blues and greens, not even white, no amber. the V atleast has white, but only in the portable, which has a much much shorter life span than the regular. definitly still an emerging technology. but its getting there.

Nice. Ares, arent you the one tried to make clear strips for the headlights? What happened to the project?

Im talking to a member right now about the clear strips. problem is no one is too interested in selling me broken headlights, or old amber strips for that matter, and I dont have the money to buy 2 complete headlight housings for 2 little amber strips.

if anyone has been in an accident and broke their headlight housings but the amber strip is intact, PM me, Id love to buy them.

This is my old prototype at work using conservative resistor values. After making these bulbs, I realized that heat wasn't such a big issue since they're just flashing.

As for the parking lights, it's pretty important to drive them at their 100mA rating. These things can handle 350mA with necessary cooling (constant on).

The Luxeon prototype is on the right, and the stock amber is on the left. I'm still using these bulbs in my car WITHOUT any problems from anyone or the law.

yup me and DJ have been workin together on these, thanks to him for all the help he's given.

his camera is much better at showing the real color of the parking lights.

difference on the turnsignals is he is using 1 luxeon and a few regular LEDs, while I am using 2 luxeons and nothing else. sadly photos suck for showing light output, and we;ve never seen each others in person, so no telling whose is actually brighter.

Hey Ares, use these photos of my headlights fitted with the LEDs + Ricky's stock headlight. See if you can take snapshots similar to this.

My camera is set to auto since I know little when it comes to digital cameras and ISO stuff.

Here's Ricky's stock headlight using his camera:
