Default carbon fiber clear coating

i just got a carbon fiber hood and hatch and im getting it installed tomorrow. they quoted me $520 for clear coating it. they said they have to sand it, coat it and do that process again or something. i want to wait a few months before i do this because i do want to do this because i dont wanna have problems later on. how much should this thing cost? and if your in socal and know people that do this let me know.

Yes.. people do it and it's very common actually. OP I don't think its all that necessary if its a quality part. I wouldn't do lips or anything like that b/c the clear while chip more quickly.

He never said it was brand new. He could have bought it used and it's faded.

my veilside hood is turing greenish yellow all over.. and Intense Motorsports said theyd charge me 250 bucks to cut it and spray it and buff it.
A good deal yes.. but 520 bucks.. um, thanks but no thanks.. find another shop.

As you can see, that price is indeed much too high. Good luck to that shop that probably thrives on inflated insurance estimate work.. find a local custom shop that still has work ethic and values a buck like Intense does haha.

Default clear coat..

oih and most of the Veilside stuff is full carbon fiber, not just overlayed fiberglass.. but its NOT uv protected. Alot of the newer stuff IS UV clearcoated... but I like the idea of a full carbon fiber hood.

My VS hood was brand new and is heavily UV stained within the first 6 months in the limited sun.

If he was a little bit more detailed in his post then he wouldve received a detailed answer.

That sounds about right as they have to prep and spray.

I personally think $520 is way off the mark, but they can charge whatever they want.

Does anyone know a good wax to use on a seibon cf hood to keep it from UV fading? I wax it every week with Meguiars gold class- not sure if that's the best or not.

Just get it painted body color with some carbon accents, your ride will look so much better.

Default wax

theres no need to wax every week.

Even decent wax lasts several months.

Polishing adds the shine.

Use 3 stages, Meguairs is fine.. cleaner, polish, then carnauba sealer wax.

Done.

Use spray details for weekly shine ups.. youre adding too much wax if you do it every week.

Wax can help, but its a question of clearcoating w UV sealant to protect it, not wax.

I agree that clearcoating a CF part that will receive direct sunlight is a good idea to protect against UV damage. I think $520 to do just the hood is too much. As a gauge, we recently had the front bumper on my girlfriend's car repainted (which is color and clear coats) and it was somewhere around $500.

From what I understand, Seibon is pretty good about the clearcoat... just paranoid about the Florida sun
