Default thinkin about my keyZ

Hi,
Im interested in buying a new key for my 350z. I was just wondering how the chip inside the original key works? Does it send out a radio frequency or does it send the signal thru the metal on the key? Does it require a battery to operate? And last but not least, how can I take out the chip?

If you have any pics, answers, or suggestions let me/us know.

...and yes I used the search button.

It works on RF. no battery needed. think of it like those tag on clothing that sets of the alarm if you walk out the store without removing it. Why do you want to remove the chip?? I don't think you can really do it without damaging it. It's was probably put in while they were molding the key so that the plastic fills all the gaps.

there is a cap on the bottom of the key. If you look close you can see it. I dont know how easy it is to remove. I do know it does not seem to work by just putting that key near the ignition and using a non coded spare key. I am sure there is a trick to it.

I was wondering if I could remove teh chip and have it on my key ring, since the aftermarket key does not have a place to insert a chip.

VandyZ
How do u know that the aftermarket key wont work if the chip is near it? Have you tried this before? i figured if the chip is truly RF then it should work in close proximity...such as on the same key ring or maybe if it was taped directly under the ignition.

Ive seen the little black rectangle on the bottom portion of the key before, but I didnt have any luck removing it. There has to be a correct way of removing it. Do we have any car security people here? The last thing i want to do is hack apart the key to get the chip.

Btw if ur wondering what key im currently looking to buy here it is:

im sure u guys have seen it before, i wonder if the key is the correct cut?

I'm interest in getting another key for my Z too but don't know how the chip will work (without bring it to the Nissan Dealer). Hopefully someone will post something helpful soon, thanks in advance.

I don't think anyone opened it. Have never seen any post on the subject. The key is pretty expensive and ripping it apart can make anyone nervous. You can be the first to try it and see if it works. I don't think that putting it on a ring would work since the range of the antenna is really short.
VandyZ the antenna is right above the solenoid, so I'm guessing about .5"-1" inch range to disarm it. So a unless the chip is on the key it probably will not work.

thanks for the pic...that helps somewhat.
Can you/anyone get a schematic for the our keys? If i had this i may be willing to experiment with the Valet key. I need to know where to cut before I start.

Thanks for the help!

I was looking for a schematic for the key, but thats the only pic in the service manual that I can find on the topic. (well there is a crappy diagram on how the key connects to the antenna then to the bcm, but everyone knows that) theres really no pic that I can find since the service manual only offers repair topics. Guess nissan figures that its easier to replace the key than to fix it.
