IT SHOULD BE SAFE, IF YOU GET IT INSTALLED RIGHT. IT WILL MOST LIKELY DECREASE YOUR ENGINE LIFE AND INCREASE MAINTENANCE. I WOULD RECOMMEND BUYING A BEATER.

please...dont post in all caps

You can always go FI later, most NA mods can be used in conjuction with FI. It will only enhance the performance. After my performance mods, my car is now fun to drive. It felt a little anemic to me stock. In my opinion though, you have to do almost all the NA mods to make it respectable. 3.5 K at least and then headers/cams if you need more. That will give you 300 RWHP. If you need more go FI. Too much HP will break parts and not be realistic for a daily driver. Too much HP creates a garage queen eventually. I've had a few.

I totally second RCKTDAWGs advice...you have to dump a lot of money into the NA mods to make them worthwhile...but it's a lot less than the $8k+ you put into a halfway decent turbo. That said, if you've got the dough for turbo...it will satisfy in ways that NA simply won't. :-) Thank god I'm poor...this would all be too tough for me to decide!

Johnny you got the right idea...you will drop a lot of money and performance improvements will be minimal at best. My opinion is this: If you want your Z to go faster get FI or hit the bottle. But the bottle has its own set of problems...

Yo Johnny boy, check out the good people over at

http://www.aebsracing.com for storker kits for that VQ35DE, They do good work from what I hear. This is the alternative to FI, This is what I am looking into myself. Cus a hight cost turbo system is sweet with the Pshhh pshhh, But the low growl of a N/A motor can sound just as good. ;p

Yes boost the engine !!!! turbos are the way to go on the vq35de!!! dont waste ur money on evpensive N/A mods if you want real power!! 5.5 psi is not alot for this motor properly tuned this should give you a good 330 whp. More maintenance yes decreased engine life yes..so what even if you cut your engines life in half (which i highly doubt) you would get 100k miles as nissan designed the 350z engine to last for at least 200k.

keep in mind its all just speculation at this point so you can compare other na motors with turbos strapped on them like the thousands of civics, silvas, focus, ect out there for example have very long lives with proper tuning and run more than 5.5 psi boost but to compare apples to apples you need to compare internal CC pressures as our vq block is pretty high compression

the VQ's weak spot is the connecting rods 5.5 psi should be a safe boost and not stress the rods too much. Run 9-10-11 psi you are getting into the danger zone ....but there again still speculation we all consider 9-11 psi possibly dangerous to the rods but to date we dont have busted rods from too much boost pressure. some blown motors due to tuning issues but to date i dont think anyone has destroyed a motor that was properly tuned with too much boost pressure.

Anybody that says their 350z is 300 rwhp N/A with bolt ons please post your dyno's as I dont believe that for 1/2 of 1 milisecond ...prove me wrong..

If you want the Greddy TT, don't waste money on headers, you'd only have to replace them anyway.

BTW, thread moved to FI section.

ppl hit 300whp with boltons and cam a few have. most get in the 290s. i doubt the engine would last even 100k with a turbo. i would expect it to last maybe 30-50k miles before needing a rebuild. more power=more stress on the engine

"the VQ's weak spot is the connecting rods"

I second that. The pistons are actually pretty nice, especially the steel ringland insert. I think we will see some snapped rods but not until people start pushing the boost over 10psi and/or raise the rev limiter.

call up a vendor z1 performance would have some very good answers to your questions as he has owned an na-tt car before (not a z but same concept).

Just find someone with a TT and beg them for a ride! If you don't pass out from the adrenaline overload or just pure fear like Itsuki Takeuchi did when Takumi Fujiwara (Tak) took him for a ride in his Toyota AE86 aka "The 86" , you can pick your chin up off the floor and clean the drool from your ears and the headrest!!!
The decision to go TT or not will be obvious! You might opt not to put the "Akina Speed Stars" sticker on the hood but you will be the fastest Tofu delivery guy in New York!

p.s. not sure how to handle all that power? Just watch Initial D
