Default Ram Air/Cold intake hood scoop

Hello everyone I'm new here but have been working on a cool project.

Behold, I have started on the most epic and probably most useless mod I have ever done to my Z

The goal of this project is to direct cold air from the hood into the intake system. I love the way the bolt on hood scoop looks on the Z. I devised a way to make it functional. To do this I will be cutting a hole in the hood and will be directing the air using ducts to a custom plenum. This plenum has a flap so I can engage and disengage the path way. This is to stop water from entering the air box. After air leaves the plenum it will be injected into the intake, before the MAF and filter.

Simple right? :haha:

Phase 1: Is to modify and prep the scoop. Then cut a hole in the stock hood. Paint the scoop and mount it to the hood.

Phase 2: Run ducts and mount the plenum. Along with a cable to the interior so you can open and close the flap.

Phase 3: Remove air box and install a cold air intake or modify existing air box to accept the duct work from the plenum.

Expectations: Something that looks cool and works. I’m not expecting much more HP gains than a cold air intake. I’m looking forward to the build process more than anything.

Phase 1: Is to modify and prep the scoop. Then cut a hole in the stock hood. Paint the scoop and mount it to the hood.

I got the scoop in this week and hit by first hiccup. The scoop's mouth is not open.

The first thing I did was test fit the scoop to the hood. As you may or may not be able to see. This sucker does not fit very well. I need to do some modifications to get this sucker to fit.

The second step is to open that sucker up. I grabbed my faithful and usually low on batteries Dremel tool. I started to cut away. I ran into a issue with the first hole because I did not realize the fiber was so thick in that spot.

So I decided to drill some holes to make the process easier.

The third step in Phase 1 is to finish cutting the holes and lay down some fiber glass.

I laid down the fiber where I had scratched the scoop cutting and smoothed out the jagged edges. I started sanding with 40 grit, 80 grit, 180, grit, 460 grit, 1500 grit, and then 2000 grit. Then I sanded and sanded some more. It took a couple of hours to get it the way I wanted it. I sprayed some primer to see the imperfections. Then sanded with 1500 and 200 until it was smooth. Then I primed the scoop again.

After the primer dried I sanded the whole scoop with 1500 and 2000 grit to make sure it had a uniform surface.

She is now ready for paint! It's not perfect but this is my first real body work. I proabaly saved a ton of cash doing this myself. I'm dropping it off for painting today so stayed tune for the next exciting episode.

I got the scoop back from the paint shop and did a test fitting last night. It might be awhile till my next update since I got a ton of college stuff and need some extra funds as well. I'll keep you guys and gals updated.

As you can see I need to do some more trimming on the underside and bolt the sucker on. Before that I need to cut the hole and make or modify an air box for the next step.

what kind of intake system are you running that takes air from that position in the hood?

I'm going to be using a Pop Charger and I'm making a custom air box that goes around it. Ducts from the scoop will force air into a custom plenum. The plenum will then force air into the box. I'm still working on that part right now. I'll have pics of the build process when I'm finished.

I just don't think this will provide any gains whatsoever. Hope I'm wrong.

Aesthetically, if you like it, props to you for manifesting your idea. Good luck.

NICE JOB!!...back in the days when i had a celica...i used the same technique..except..the scoop i had was functional and celica had a scoop..but smaller..i fitted 4 axial server fans and used a switch from my dash to switch on and off those fans to suck cold air and feed the bay.

Seems like a long turbulant mission for the air to reach the intake

you can get this same effect with a cf air duct. i used a flex tube and went from duct to my pop charger via the hole in core support.

There are better ways to do it, no doubt. Even just a cold intake will prabably do the same thing. I really wanted the scoop and was not going to do it unless it works.

I really just doing this for the build process. It is a cool thing to me and no other Z around is going to be the same.

You want to be different? Set the scoop going directly into the plenum with it's own throttle body, then set up a fuel injector(s) to spray fuel into the channel of air using fuel pressure to control the flow.

The only way to tune it would be trail and error though lol.

That would be rad! However, I do not have the skill or money for that.

Default Blown up Z

I saw your other thread about your Z blowing up today. I hope the stealership doesn't tell you this was the reason behind it.

But seriously, hope things work out ok for you and your Z. Everytime that I've talked to a stealership about anything it felt like it was turning into a proctologist visit.

Good luck!
