Default Question About Silver Inserts On the Steering Wheel

I don't understand why Nissan doesn't sell the silver plastic pieces on the steering wheel separtely? I have an 2004 with the switches on the right side and my left side (blank/no switches) is peeling. I have called several dealerships and they said I would need to buy the entire steering wheel assembly for that one part. I would be willing to buy the side with the switches but it does not include the left side.

This sounds crazy to me. I know others have done some pretty cool stuff to fix this issue. Here are my questions:

1) If I buy the 2006 switch, (with the radio controls on the left and the cruise on the right) will the cruise and other switches on the right work? Will the switches on the left work? I have the bose system. It really doesn't matter if the left side switches work. I didn't have them before.

2) Are these other dealerships mistaken? Does Nissan sell this part without having to buy the whole steering assembly? If so, please provide me with the part number.

I am about to get them painted but would prefer not to go this route.

Thank you in advance for any help.

That just seems wrong. I have spent a lot of time searching for solutions to this problem and have read this is very common. Surely Nissan has a better alternative for us than a new steering wheel assembly. My leather is perfect, my switches work... the clear coat is peeling badly. My car has 19K miles on it.

Not a great deal, but cheaper than a new steering wheel, and it looks like it comes in the oem brushed color: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/350z07d/50-3064

NO STICK ON TRIM PIECES!!!

get the proper tamper proof torx bit and take them off.

get them prof. painted if you dont know how to do get quality rattle can job.

if the scratches are shallow enough you can sand the clear off (use caution), pull the scratches in the metal the right way with some fine steal wool and re-apply clear.

sub'd for part source...

I guess my wedding ring damaged mine. The clear coating was actually flaking off on mine and looked horrible. I was able to slowly pick at it and remove the clear to make it look decent, but I'm in the market for the oem pieces as well if anyone finds a reasonably priced source.

Thanks!

I think that we're all looking for left piece (wedding ring side in my case). This link only discusses right hand side or overlays as far as I can tell.

"Can I buy the silver trim piece on the left side of the steering wheel? I see the right piece in this picture with the cruise controls, but not the left side."

130k on my 03, no problems. My ring doesn't ever touch it, and don't know why you would hold the wheel in a way it woud get scratched anyhow.

I spent the last couple of days contacting salvage yards. I first went to www.car-part.com. Then I typed in what I needed and started calling. In two days I should have an insert that looks new. I hope this information helps and may be of assistance for other annoying parts that can't be purchased from the dealership.

I have the same problem as well. One option would be to use 3m di noc. They have it in a brushed aluminum.

Have some clear bra installed over the new one before you use it.

Switches only are:

Audio and Cruise (06+ illuminated): 25550-CF40A
Cruise Stock (03-05 cruise only): Click here (not sure on this part number - one listed isn't correct)

More to it than that. Need to run extra wires and need a new spiral cable.

Yes. See above post for what you need.

Sorry just read you need the blank piece. Sorry not sure if that gets included in the one I listed. I do however have one(03-05) both cruise controls and blank piece in great condition which I don't need anymore (did the audio control swap).

PM if your interested. Postage may hurt but I'm sure we can work something out.

If I'm jamming to a good song, I'll place my hand on the silver part and play air drums or tap along with the music. It's a bad habit that I can't seem to kick.

I know that changing my habits would have been the cheapest fix, but the damage is done and it would probably take shock therapy to make me stop.

Terrasmak, I'm glad that you don't have the problem, and if you were a noob, I'd say "thanks for your completely useless post", but I do actually respect what you do on the forums here, T.

I guess I'll just have to find a wrecked Z and convince them to sell me the piece on the left. It is ridiculous in my mind that I'd have to buy the whole steering wheel from Nissan just to get that piece on the left. And even though I end up with stuff on my car that some people would consider cheap/crap (my inexpensive wheels come to mind), I draw the line at cheap CF overlays for the interior.

^ This is exactly what I'm going to do once I find a replacement. Thanks, that's a great idea.
