Default OEM Bumper Repair

Posted this on my local Z forums and got no responses.

Im bought a used OEM bumper but it has a nice size crack in it. I figured id just take it to the body shop since im getting it for pretty cheap, but i was quoted $450 to fix the crack and paint the bumper and lip that i will be adding on. I know thats a pretty good price but if im going to pay that much i might as well just buy something aftermarket.

Ive been reading up on different methods of fixing Poly bumpers the last couple days which did nothing except confuse me more.

Id like to try to fix the crack myself and shave off the nissan emblem while im at it.

The previous owner had all the cracks along the bottom fixed with bondo which just ended up cracking again. Im going to take all the bondo off and start over.

I already bought Duramax 4030 to fix the cracks and will prob be buying Evercoat Poly Flex soon to fill in any imperfections that are left.

Any of you guys have any experience doing this or advice? Links i might have missed?

well the paint itself will cost around 300. So 450 in total for fixing and filling in the dent and everything doesnt seem too bad. Don't know how much of 150 you will save trying to fix it up yourself and then having them paint it.

Problem with bumpers is that they are thin plastic, and not designed to be fixed. Essentially they are throwaway.

That said, any fix will require support in the rear. A thin piece of plastic and epoxy will work. This will prevent the damaged area from flexing.

Let the bodyshop do it. What you're going to save isn't worth the time you're going to put into it. If you do decide to do it yourself try to get Q-Bond from a local body shop supply shop. It's kind of a crazy glue adhesive mixture with a powder that makes plastic. pretty neat stuff and dries in seconds.

One of the main reasons i decided to go ahead and do it myself is because the owner of the bodyshop i usually go to told me he didnt want to fill in the Nissan hamburger with bondo because he as afraid it was going to crack.

Not sure if he planned on using bondo on the crack too but obviously that doesnt work well. There are some other small cracks on the bottom of the bumper that were bondo'd and it didnt hold up well at all.

Id rather do things myself anyways, if anyone is interested i can keep this thread updated as i go along.

Ill be adding a lip, i dont like too many of the aftermarket complete bumpers except the Nismo V2 and Voltex, and my cars a little to low to be messing those up.
