06+ headlamp upgrade to my 03
im in the mist of buying a 06+ headlamp for my 03. Now im watching one on ebay for a really good price but it doesnt include the ballast, the hid bulb or the circle covers for the back so basically its just a housing.
So is the 03 headlamp hardware and accessories interchangeable onto the 06+ headlamps or will i have to buy those parts separately if i buy this specific headlamp

Your going to get a pair right? Having one 03 headlamp and one 06 headlamp would look very odd and you'd have different beam patterns.
Anyway, yes ballast will work from 03 to 06 headlamp. Bulb will not, unless your not afraid to slightly modify the bulb base. Try to fit the 03 D2R bulb into the 06 D2S socket and you'll see you need to cut a little notch into the base of the bulb. I've done this, works fine, does not have any negative effects. The rear "circle" covers as you call them will not work, they are different. You can buy new ones for 06 headlamps off courtesyparts.com

i already have the right light with everything on it. Thats why im looking at one light on ebay. The light im looking at doesnt have the ballast, igniter, bulb and access cover. The access cover is not a big deal but the ballast, igniter and bulb is expensive.
@ gregom - you said the bulb needs to be altered to get it to work. I cant just swap everything over from the 03 to the 06 (ballast, D2R igniter and bulb). If not can i get a D2S igniter and connect it to the 03 ballast. Is that possible???

You want the access cover... you get any water into the headlamp and your going to get water condensation inside the lens and possibly a fried ballast. You can buy the rear covers off courtesyparts.com.
You can swap igniters, but the igniter isn't the problem. The problem is how the bulb fits into the projector bulb seat. The base of the bulb has a notch in it, the location of the notch on D2S is different than from a D2R bulb. All you need to do is use a dremel or some other basic cutting tool to cut the notch into the base of the bulb. If you try to fit a D2R into the 06+ headlamp you'll see where you need to cut it. The plastic is soft so it won't take too long. This has no discernible effect on light output or beam pattern.
Personally I would just get new bulbs, HID bulbs lose a fair bit of light over their life span. Your bulbs are 8 years old probably, so you'll get a lot more brightness from a new set. You can get a pair of new for under $100. Check out theretrofitsource.com

The igniter/ballast is for D2S/D2R. It doesn't matter which bulb is used, the ballast and igniter are the same. I don't think you can just buy the igniter, it comes as part of the ballast. You can use both ballasts from your 03 headlamps on 06 headlamps.
Good luck with getting your 06 headlamps up and running, you'll be happy with their performance. I'd still recommend new bulbs, and i'd strongly urge you to get the rear access covers.
