Default Painting Carbofiber!?!

I have a carbon fiber hood that i would like to paint and leave certain spots out the probleme is that i went to 2 body shop asking them to paint it and they said they cant because the paint will chip and they cant sand the carbonfiber because they dont know what is over it. Is it posibly to paint carbon fiber without the paint chiping or is what the paint shops are telling me true because i have seen a couple of carbonfiber hoods painted.

you can paint it.

the hood is coated in RESIN and if its a reputable company, a gel clear coat over that..

you can paint anything. just have them treat the areas you want to paint like fiberglass- tape off the portions you want carbon still, and paint the rest. then after painting. clear coat the entire hood-

Sounds like they just don't want to put the work in. Especially since you say that you want to leave certain spots open. Which means they have to spray on some extra clear coat on the unpainted spots to help the lines blend better, which left undone will be left open for paint chips.
At least that is what it sounds like to me... or they just don't know what they are doing, then I would suggest finding someone else.

Glad this thread was started!

I'm actually get a CF wing in next week or two, and I definitely do want it painted to match. Chebosto, or anyone else who knows, should it be sanded first, or just painted like normal then clear coated?

Also, has anyone had any experience painting CF yet?

You are not painting Carbon Fiber. You are painting the finish that is over it. Nothing strange or exotic about it. Just prep as you would any other article about to receive paint.

Pinnacle is correct.. the fibers themselves are already set in resin.. you're not painting the fibers physically. you're just painting the top on the resin- i'm sure the regular way is a sand, primer, and paint with clear coat--
