Default Need help removing shifter

So yes, even though i have looked at some guides online, i'm still not clear on how to rotate the shift **** off. I have an 08 manual tranny. One guide says i need to clamp the part above the cotton cover under the shift boot with a pair of pliers and rotate counter clockwise. however, apparently if i do this wrong, i can royally screw up the transmission so i want to make sure i do this right. can anyone point me in the right direction?

i really just need to know how to unscrew the ****. i know how to do everything else

mine was easy. took the shifter cover off, got a buddy and a big set of pliers and a rag, he put the rag in the pliers and held the shift linkage piece or whatever in place, then i simply just twisted the shift **** off with my hand. took 3 minutes.

if you have access to a lift I'm pretty sure there is a bolt that you have to loosen near the transfer case that holds the shift **** in place. after you remove it then you can undo the ****. Iv'e never done this its just what iv'e seen when i researched this so it could be wrong.

He's right on the money. And while he's got the car on the lift, he should definitely get to those muffler bearings.

You guys really need to recalibrate you sarcasmeters.

I followed this procedure but still found my shift **** difficult to get off.

The key to not damaging your transmission is to apply equal and opposite torque on the shift lever (Clockwise direction), to counteract the torque you apply to the shift **** (counterclockwise). Even using the method in the guideline, I still managed to partially twist the leather cover off the **** before breaking torque on it to twist it off.

hahaha sorry i did not mean to put transfer case i meant transmission but i did see a video where you had to undo a bolt underneath the car to be able to unscrew the shift **** but i went back and watched it and remembered it was because they were installing a short shifter, sorry for my ignorance haha
