Default alum trim on steering wheel removal...

Anyone know how the alum trim pieces on both sides of the horn are removed?
i checked and noticed there is a philips screw on the backside of the steering wheel which seems to secure those alum. trim plates on - i got the screw off, but didn't want to yank the alum. piece too hard in fear of breaking something....

an isometric would be ideal...

thanks.

I was wondering the same thing. Also, Jeff or Jason, can these pieces be purchased or would a person have to order a whole new steering wheel?

looks like it's just held in by clips. Unscrew and pull.

In alphared's post the diagram looks like it shows two items (screws, bolts???) directly behind where the aluminum plate on the steering wheel is. Very close to the steering colum itself, anyone see if a screw is on the oppoisite side yet?

Maybe this diagram could help.
From the Service Manual:
Disconnect battery for aleast 3 mins
Remove the two bolt (torque bolts, 4-10 ft-lb when putting it back on)
Disconnect 2 connectors (Airbag and Horn/Cruise, i think)

This way you can get a better look at what's holding the aluminum trim.

I believe the service manual calls for a special tool, not a torx wrench. I looked into doing this a while back and gave up when I came across the special tool requirement.

If someone is willing to loan me these pieces I would love to make some carbon fiber overlays for them. I have been thinking about a set for quite a while

I finally took mine off
I took the screws out on the back of the steering wheel
Then on the lower part of the wheel, I took out the 2 Security Tork screws #2 & #4 in the diagram above (they are size TX30)

The the center section comes off.
You will see to torque screws, holding on the wheel, remove them
Then.... there is one last screw, hidden at the bottom, below the wires in this picture, that you have to take out, and then the whole wheel will come off.

Then one screw holding on the aluminum trim piece
rockshox, you are welcome to mine, as I tried to make a hole in mine for a button, and failed bad.
But you could use it for the shape still

I ended up ordering the left steering wheel controls from the FX, as they are the same as the z.
I am going to use the mode button, for my overtake boost button.

Will post back with pictures, when I install it

Here is the wheel off now

Wow involved.

P.S. I hope that you are not dangling the airbag system by just those wires that scares me.
