Default what is this,......????????

There is a 3x5 black square under the panel located on the rear hatch of the car. It has no wires to it and is setting on a floating suspension type system. What in the world could this be? I check the manual and did not see a description of the part anywhere. It looks to be important because it is directly in the middle of the car with four large bolts holding it on. Can anyone tell me what it's for?

I believe that is the weight for the hatch. It can be removed to lessen the weight of the hatch. Can someone confirm this?

Without a doubt it's the hatch weight. I took mine out a while ago when I installed my wing.

You'd remove it if you put an aftermarket wing on your car. Due to the extra weight of the wing, the hatch won't pop open as easily, thus you have to remove some weight.

I took mine out and my hatch still grabs sometimes...I.E. I press the hatch button, go over to open the hatch, and it's locked again. So I have to pop it with one hand and quick grab it with the other....this usally happens if rained or something, and theres extra weight on the hatch.

you guys have got to be kidding me!!! It is just a weight???!!! You would think that with technology today, they would come up with a way to make the hatch work without any "ADDITIONAL" weight! I'm glad I asked here, My dealer would have never known this. I wonder if it is on the track model, which has been shaved for weight purposes?

Yeah, but it's actually a pretty good/simple thing to have, so that when a spoiler is installed, instead of having to get new struts (or stronger springs like some other trunks), all you need to do is remove that weight.

Well you have to remember that not all Z's come with spoilers...and then with the NISMO options (s-tune, r-tune) you need a quick way to reduce some weight. Kinda clever if you ask me.

Hmmm...about the size of a CD case...if I remember correctly. Probably weighs 2-5 lbs.

It's not worth taking out for no reason if that's what you're thinking!

Hey, I just wonder if there are any other weights that can be removed from the car such as this one? Is it possible that this weight contributes to the 49/51 weight ratio in the car?

So, according to the previous info, these weights are only on the hatch lid of the ones with the spoiler?

I think they're probably found in all Z's...

I don't think they remove them for the smaller factory spoiler, but on a nismo tune car, they'd want to get rid of it.

It's only hypothetical that they actually would remove it from the dealership....it's probably more of an afterthought.

You can start looking tho...

There is another big weight in the front of the car, but I'm not sure what the purpose is...and it may only be on roadsters...can't remember.
