Then dealers, auto body shops and mechanics wouldn't make any money.........

God Knows, we don't want to take money away from the dealers

yeah its plastic. but Im not sure... maybe its psycological but I like having metal doors...

Id guess it has some drawbacks that we arent thinking of; maybe it scratches easier... or isnt as strong in a crash... but paint scratches; and sheet metal doesnt hold up much on impact... so I donno.

Plastic might resist dents more, but any hard impact and you will have a hole there with some jagged edges. I have seen a few Saturns like this, looks kinda wierd with a big hole on the side.

I have seen a Saturn literally shattered all over a street ... those things are not pretty in accident. Now this was back in 1999, so the plastics they use might have changed a bit ... but who knows.

I think it would be nice if we were all made out of the same material .. then we would have no paint problems

asked another forum; their reasons were...

changes in temp change the panels size noticably; gaps can increase in cold weather.

when cold; it might not dent; but it can crack.

they do shatter when hit hard enough; saturn apparently has some beefy door supports for this reason.

the surface quality isnt so great; and they are grey; meaning they are painted; meaning it can still scratch.

sounds to me like its lacking the funding to get it all right; and bigger names arent jumping on the bandwagon for the reason RJ gave. its common knowledge when someone makes anything they set out to ensure it has a useful lifespan; even if it means sabotaging their own product.
