Question Stupid question about search function???

How can I get the search to only show matches with ALL keywords?

I tried
+keyword1 +keyword2 ...
keyword1 AND keyword2...

It seems to me that it shows all posts with at least one of your keywords and thus makes it pretty difficult to find specific things.

Also if you search for "dip" it will not find "dipstick" even if you use "dip*"

The more keywords you use the more results you will get, making it very difficult to narrow the search.

Am I missing something? It seems nearly impossible to look for specific information without having to wade through thousands of posts.
Thanks

You're right. I also complained about this before. This is why I will answer SOME "newb" questions because even though people say to search, it is nearly impossible to find exactly what you're looking for since it doesn't search for ALL keywords.

I don't think its possible for Non-Premier members to Sarch using the "Boolean" functions.

For example, I CAN search for "varis" and "duct" and "install" and it will only bring up posts with all three words...

However, this is not available to non-Premier members. There is in depth discussion as to why in the "Feedback and Suggestions" forum.

Money and difficulty aside, if the vbforum were implemented correctly on adequate hardware there would be no problems for anyone. As forums get bigger they always run into the same search engine problems. As a bandaid for the problem, only paying members are allowed to perform resource intensive searches; everyone else gets a load of junk. Sad, but true. The other Z sites have working search engines though, so if it's important you can always try searching elsewhere, or even try searching my350z through google. If all else fails, create yet another redundant thread.

Money and difficulty aside? That's like saying, "Aside from the fact that his heart stopped and his liver exploded, he's doing just fine."

FWIW, the forum software is implemented correctly, but Boolean database searches are what they are....CPU costly. There's only so much you can do to ease the pain and I'm sure if it can be done given the resources available, Silvrhand and crew have done it.

As for the other sites having working search engines...wait until they have 65000+ users with hundreds upon hundreds active at any given time and see if that doesn't force them to lock things down a bit.

lol... exactly... that's like searching for one thing and getting a whole slew of junk and saying.... oh just what I was looking for!!

It is implemented correctly in it's current configuration, sure. The site in general has been working great lately, as far as I can tell.

What I was getting at, was having a fully functional search engine for this many users/data takes more money and a more complex server scheme to do effectively/correctly. It's certainly not a task I would like to undertake. It's MUCH easier and cheaper just to limit big searches to premier members rather than make it work fully for everyone. I totally understand, and I'm not at all complaining(as if I would even have a right to complain lol). FWIW I think the my350z server admin crew do an excellent job.

I've seen it done before with a vbforum much bigger than my350z.com. It took them a long time (and a lot of money I'm sure) to get it right. But they eventually did.

Yeah. I limit myself to the first 3 pages of results before I give up...

That's mean....

At least if this is a feature only available to paying forum users, than why not put it among the list of benefits? I read the list of features you get when paying and it lists all sorts of things but not the better search function.

How about increasing the search timeout for non-paying customers?
I would prefer having to wait 30min between searches (now it is 15 seconds) rather than the no boolean search.
Hell, I would I even be happy if I could only do 1 boolean search per day, rather than this ridiculous state now.
Especially now with so many nonsense postings and so many useful ones among them... it is plain and simple CRUEL to let people search for several keywords.
Most probably don't even realize why they are getting so many hits, and start reading all the crap from top...

This puts a whole new perspective on newbs being to lazy to search. NO WONDER they don't use search.

e.g. search for oil dripping... gotta read all posts about oil?
search for brake fluid... yeah lovely...
I feel like I am being made fun out of.

<end of rant>

Seriously, would it be possible to enable boolean search for non-paying visitors with increased time between searches (e.g. 30min instead of 15 sec)

Or will it come to that that people start asking premier members to do a search for them... like the VIN check...

I mean I understand that it takes a lot of effort to keep a site as big as this one going, but aren't there more intelligent ways to limit non-paying customers than crippling the search function and having them post things all over again and again... ?

It took me half an our to find this info!

A short note, at least in the "advanced search" screen, should be placed to inform that this "Boolean" type search is only available for paying members (altough it is stupid as it creates lots of redundant threads - there must be a better solution to this). However, that would only be fair and inform people about one benefit of a paid membership.

I understand it asks a lot to have the search working like the boolean for everyone. However, how much space is wasted at the moment by creating 200 times the same topic? That means that the search function has to go through every single one of them ,while you can decrease the # of topics so easily.
Also the search wouldn't have to display so many topics if the specific topics only are listed.

It's just a loop if you ask me: bad search>too many topics listed>a lot of unnecessary topics created by people who can't find what their looking for>more time to search through all topics> bad search

At least all flamers to newbies and even veteran users should stop shouting 'USE THE GODD*MN SEARCH' as it's almost useless like this. Probably these flamers are paying members so they can use the search like it should be available to everyone...
