Open deck, but not like the Hondas. It is only open about 2.5" deep.

Open deck means the cylinder walls are not solid all the way the block. With an open design, the cylinder wall is bathed a channel of coollant...hence...open deck...think of it like a moat around a castle.

In a closed deck, the cylinder bore is created from the block....so its solid...no moat.

So the advantage of open deck blocks is that they have better cooling capabilities but result in a decrease in strength. Is it possible to convert an open bloack deck into a closed deck? I always read about people talking about doing it to the VQ, but it doesn't seem like it would be an easy task.

AEBS sleeves would convert it to a closed deck.

Correct....you can resleeve an open deck design by removing the stock cylinders and replacing them with cast iron sleeves. Some are vented slightly for coolant...others are solid.
