With the great results of the APS TT kit hitting 11 seconds on stock engines I am interested what everybody is doing in terms of roll cages sine NHRA rules state that you need a rollcage starting at 11.99 et's

Is there a decent company that makes some that are not too intrusive and ugly and what are the price ranges and what's involved for the installs.

 

Are you sure it is 11.99? I'm almost positive that 11.99 is when you need a helmet, 10.99 is when you need a rollcage. I'd have to check though.

You will probably want to look at Kirk Racing roll cages, i'm personally going to find out if the Cusco 7-point roll cage will comply with NHRA rules.

 

At my local tracks its 13.99 or lower and you need a helmet, 11.99 lower and you do need a cage, although Im not sure how many points? (6?) Anyways, mrtomcat I recently saw a sweet Cusco 7-point roll cage in this thread ----> https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....ight=roll+cage

 

I know that some rules have changes for 05. And I being one of the people in the 11 sec club, have been doing the research and should know everything within the next week or so. I know that Raceway Park here in Jersey has changed the rollcage rule to cars 11.49 and faster, need a 5 point cage. The standard Kirk racing bar is a 4 point and is made for road racing and not nhra legal. Also, other things that may use to be needed for 11.99 and faster include a 4 point harness, external battery shutoff, and exposed lugnuts n studs.(open eneded lugs) I am trying to see if these rules have also changed to 11.50.. I will let you know... As far as helmets, NJ requires helmets no matter how slow you are... Like I said, I ran the 11.82 and they didn't say anything to me the next time I ran...

 

here's the helmet rule:
Helmet: Required in all vehicles faster than 13.99 seconds. Helmet must meet SNELL 90 or better standards (must have label inside of helmet).

Here's the roll bar/cage rule:
Roll Bars & Cages: Roll bar required in any vehicle running between 10.00 and 11.99 E.T. (convertibles between 11.00 and 13.99). Roll bar/cage structures must meet minimum NHRA standards as found in the 2004 rulebook.

Note: When elapsed times are quicker than 11.99 specialized racing equipment is required. For example, when a roll bar or cage is required, so is an approved 5-point harness assembly. If you know or suspect that your vehicle will exceed these ET limits, we suggest contacting the NHRA Tech Department at (626) 914-4761 with your questions.

If you are running a street car, and just kissing the 11's, its unlikely they will ask you to come back with a roll cage. At least the couple tracks I have visited seemed relatively leanient. If you are running deep 11's or lower, then yeah, they might enforce the rules.

the tracks out here in cali are relentless, they would immediately kick you.
I was told to wear a helmet once because I was running 8.7 (1/8 mile) and 8.59 was the rule to need a helmet. But they said I am too close...

 

Here, they only make you wear a helmet if you go 12.0 or faster.

 

Here is what I found~
ROLL BAR RULE 2005 AND RACEWAY PARK IN 2005
The NHRA has announced that some of the rules regarding roll bars and safety equipment have been changed for the upcoming 2005 drag racing season. First off the Hardtops will be able to run and dial in at 11.50 during eliminations and time trials. All other rules will continue to apply for these cars. Convertibles will go from 14.00 to 13.50 during eliminations and time trials for an eliminator. If a convertible is PURE STOCK it will be able to run up to 11.50 in time trials and on street nights, but it must be stock. No sticky tires, aftermarket bolt-ons, Nitrous, etc. will be allowed. Tech inspection will determine if a car is legal for the PURE STOCK rules. We will allow convertibles to run 12.80's or so as an example if they fit all the rules. The final say whether someone's car is legal and fits the PURE STOCK theme is totally up to the RP management. For more info on these and all NHRA rules, you should join the NHRA or purchase a 2005 NHRA rulebook.

 

I'm a bit confused, does this say you can run without a roll cage if you're slower than 11:50 compared to the previous 11.99?

I have the 2005 rule book at home I got to read up on that.

But in any case I'll plan on being in the 11:50 range anyways so the roll bar is pretty much a must, just need to find a decent place that makes them to specification without attracting too much cops on the street

 

I wish I could get a custom one similar to Cusco's, but different in the rear. Plus, I don't feel like having to replace my rear view mirror to fit the bar.

sweet, now someone explain to me the difference between a 6 point and a 7 point cage and in what scenario I'd pick one over the other

 

It's just how many points it is mounted to the chassis/frame. The more the more sturdy.

 

but are there any regulations saying: "at this speed you need a 6 point, at this you need a 7 point..."

And which one will be more confortable for daily driving (my guess is the 6 point...)

I know sooo many questions....but I don't want to end up installing the wrong thing only to be turned away at the track

 

I sent Z1 and email asking if the Cusco kit would fit NHRA specs and they replied and said: NO, you need to get a cutom bar kit for that...

Shoot.

Of course now my question is why would anyone buy/sell a Roll Cage that does not fit the safety regulations, kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it

 

Are there any roll cages considered safe if you're not wearing a helmet?
