Default engine life....how long?

would a stock motor with a single turbo last until 120k 150k with the same number of repairs as a n/a motor. or is the turbo goting to cut the engin life down to 110k or less. i want to turbo my z but im planing on keeping it for a long time, so long gevitly is key.

I wish this question could be answered with any level of certainty, but its just not possible. With as many variables at work, there is just no way to know. As a general rule of thumb...the more power and trq on a stock motor will reduce the life of the motor. That is just basic mechanical engineering. The stock engine was probably designed to last about 150-200K miles. If you add significant power, even with an absolutely perfect tune, it stands to reason that that life will be reduce. By how much...nobody really knows. We can only look to the experiences of others. Phunk and I had about 15-20K miles on our FI motors before tearing them down, and the internals, and bearings were in excellent condition. The bearings in mind were perfect...they could have been re-used.

It also depend on how you drive it. An engine that sees redline every day for an extended period of time with breakdown faster than one that is just cruised around, and only occasionally raced.

if you are looking for 120,000 miles or more, then you shouldnt modify and race the car.

i will be extremely happy if my built motor pushing 650-700rwhp lasts me 50,000 miles... and thats not even likely... something will break, oil pump, valve retainer... SOMETHING will eventually give. The more you modify, the further away you become from your factory engineered setup. forced induction is out of the question if you want your engine to last that long. it may be possible if you dont beat on the car much... but not very likely at all.

That's like asking how long you'll live with a cocaine habit. When you die will never be certain, but you're lifespan will definitely be much shorter (yet more fun!).

Haha!

If you're willing to shell out that kind of cash for boost an engine is only 3-4k more. Plus pulling a motor in our cars seem to be much easier than most cars. Replacing a motor is much easier than you think.

so when the engine dies i could just take off the turbo and stuff and put it on a new engine.

my plan:
my forged/built twin turboed motor will be up and running any minute now...
in a few months, i'm gonna buy a used block...sleave it...build it with forged internals...and have it there...just in case...or when i get bored...and if i decide not to keep it around i'll sell it...

i'm trying to be extremely prepared this time around..no more 4 month downtime!

My horrible plan:

I plan on running a ST kit for about a year until I get around to building the motor for more boost (and to allow time to pay off the turbo kit and install!).

If it does blow during that time have I'll about $15k in stereo, rims, and performance mods. I can probably just sell some **** to repair/replace the motor.

Anyway, car is my daily driver, so I hope it holds together!!

If you keep it stock the engine will never die unless you remove the rev limiter and redline like mad or down shift without rev matching or hydrolock , or not change the oil or have enough of it.

I'm thinking about just buying a shortblock and building it while it's out. Then if I ever need to I can go this motor if I sell the car and go back to N/A.
