I never have issues when the VDC is off. The only time it has came back on was at a time when there was airbag deployment, and I am thankful it stopped the car, or I might still be spinning (toboned by a 93 caddy right by the rear wheel).
I've done a complete, totally out of control, 180 spin and VDC never did a thing. I was even pretensious enough to curse it afterwards, even though I was the one who shut it off (in the rain) thirty seconds before the spin. It was the last time I ever 'wanted to see what RWD can do in the rain.'

well i would imagine it to be impossible for it to recover the car from anything once you loose traction in a situation like that. even when i hit the gas hard it will spin the tires for a sec before it comes on. i can even get the back to do a quick fishtail with it on and not even have it try to catch it. honestly the only time vdc was a benefit for me was in the snow. other than that, when i find myself in a hairy spot, i would rather not fight the car plus vdc trying to control it as it makes the whole situation less predictable. i have only wrecked once and it was because of abs brakes. i needed all 4 tires to lock up, and only 2 did making my car go the wrong direction.
these systems can help a novice driver when they are pushing it. but if you are pushing it really hard, you want it to be predictable and a computer trying to control the car when it really has no idea what the hell is really happening except g-forces and tire speeds it can make the whole situation worse.
i was heading on a 2 lane mountain road hitting turns anywhere from 100-120mph, and the damn vdc started trying to lock up my front inside tire even though i was not sliding or close to sliding. tends to make me not trust the whole system, and in that cause had me pissed off and a little butt puckered up, as it was trying to pull me off the road.
