is mileage stored in cluster or ecu?

just curious if mileage is stored in the instrument cluster or if it is stored in the ecu? having problems with cluster and have a lead on another, just curious if my mileage would change with the new cluster. thanks

Hopefully you've found one w/ less miles on the clock.
