Default Intercooler Protection?

Has anyone here installed a grill or anything up front to protect their intercooler from rocks flying up and dinging it? If so, what did you install? Please post pics if you have some.

Dented fins are worth the additional air flow IMO. Just straighten them every once in a while.

The APS FMIC is built like a brick Sh-- House. Aside from cosmetic dings , Im not too concerned.

You can get a coil straightener (for lack of better terms ). And if you get large enough mesh, I don't see how it will really restrict air flow.

If I were you, I think I would opt for some sort of protection.

I just left my stock grill on for now. I was thinking of cutting it out, but I don't think it restricts airflow much at all. It also makes my car very inconspicuous.

I was going to leave my grill on too when I get my APS kit put on

Have to see how it looks with it off though, maybe I'll like it better with no grill, dunno yet

the aftermarket grills I think are very restrictive and on top of that they heat up too

I thought it was a good idea...had this done at KBody Shop in ATL. Only visible from the side or very close up front.

That looks really nice. I wonder how much efficiency you would lose with even that small amount of grill over the cooler.

Kshep, where did you get the material to make the grille from? I'm looking for the "chicken wire-type" material Mitsu uses on their Evo grilles and your grille looks like it's made from the same material. Was the grille always black or did you paint it?

It is called wire cloth or wire belt. It is available in different weave spacings, crimp styles, and wire diameters. Similar stuff to what GM uses on the Cadillac CTS-V grills.

Thanks for the info. Do you know where I can buy this type of wire?

Sounds good to me. I shipped the bumper cover to ATL for the grill install after seeing the material on Sung's (m3powerrr on this site) 3rd gen RX7.

Check the gallery link on his site for the RX7 and a highly customized TT Z33.
