Default Which Oil Pan Replacement (with install of Vortech)?

I searched and searched.. couldn't find much, probably because the word "oil" brings up too many useless threads. Anyways..

I am going to pioneer through my own Vortech install, and figured since I was saving a couple bucks, I should try and make my install that much easier. I was wondering which oil pans (pre tapped of course) will make my install the easiest and go well with the Vortech kit? Obivously I would like to save as much money as possible, so I don't need a $1000.00 oil pan. Any insight would be great.

While you are browsing this thread, would anyone mind shedding light on the subject of going to a smaller pulley (3.12) upon install of the kit? I am not planning on getting the car dynoed/tuned that soon after the install, I just want to make sure with the smaller pulley everything will go smoothly.

Thanks in advance as always, this forum is a life saver.

Jason

Jason...I really dont feel you need a new oil pan . If you was to do a TT install , the trq may warrent a after market oil pan . But with the Vortech a oil pan spacer will do . $90 I think . It will hold the extra quart of oil . You can do the 3.12 pulley when you do the install of the kit , if your going to tune shortly afterwards....Oh by the way...Ive never heard of any one that has tried to tap an after market oil pan for the return oil line . It needs to be above the oil fill level to get a good flow back into the pan . SOme say it will work..tapping the after market pan...But havent heard of any one that said they did it and it worked

I like the way the APS pan looks best. Quality of it is exceptional.

I may have confused the tapping of the upper oil pan with that of the lower oil pan.

I am trying to avoid the drilling of the oil pan process... Is this feasable, or am I a complete idiot? I am definitely not doing this for performance gains, I am doing this to ease the install...

That's the issue.. I don't have anyone capable of tuning within a 4 hour plus drive. So I want to make sure that I can slap the 3.12 pulley on, use the shorter serpentine belt and not have to worry about anything. Obviously I would like to get the car tuned someday, because I am sure it is going to run extremely rich and waste a ton of fuel and lose power; but that will be down the road.

like I said...people have talked about doing this...some say it will work...me personally...I would stick to what the instructions say to do it.

Well then I would go with the stock pulley . When you take the drive to have it tuned . Take the pulley and new belt with you . Install it when you get there , or install the pulley right before you go and dont boost it on the way there

Are you talking about the oil pan spacer? I would like to use a replacement oil pan if possible and not drill anything; am I asking something that is impossible for the vortech setup?

Is this a fuel issue? I read a post about the vortech's spinning revolutions, saying that it spins at 43k with 3.33 pulley and 47.2k with 3.12. Vortech said under 50k is safe operating. Just grabbing facts from another post.

I don't mind NOT installing a smaller pulley, I just want to be clear on the reasons behind it. I definitely don't want to jeopardize anything for a couple hp's.

The spacers and aftermarket oil pans are too low for an oil feed.

So basically you have to drill the upper oil pan? Should I worry about doing this on jack-stands? This is the only part of the install that I am really concerned about.

I'm almost done with my self-install of the vortech. I thought the tapping of the oil pan would be the hardest part, but it was far from that. It was one of the more straight foward parts of the install, and Ive never tapped anything before in my life. I did the whole install on jackstands BTW. Just go ahead and tap it.

I guess that is reassuring.

If you have a chance would you mind sending me a PM on the issues that gave you trouble and how to get around them?

Good luck finishing the install and thanks.
