Default Vortech CAI

I remember seeing something about this a while ago and then I havent heard anything since. Has anyone taken and moved the Vortech air filter outside of the engine bay?It doesnt seem like it would be too hard to get a custom pipe bending shop to bend you one that routes from the SC out to the front of the vehicle. I am thinking something along the lines of placing the filter in the area of in front of the FMIC. I wouldnt think that would restrict much air flow thru the IC. ANyone have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc? Would it be likley that a retune would be in order with this being done?

TIA,
Zach

Wouldn't want to locate it where rain water would likely get into it..

rain water drip splashes won't get sucked up thru the filter

IMO it'd be better than sucking in heat soaked air

Direct water on the filter would almost certainly get into the intake and thru the blower settle in the I\C and if your really lucky into the engine.. The water would not only be from rain drops but from the spray that usually accompanies the car in front of you..Would not take the chance..For minimal gain!

But what is the difference in puting the filter out there with just a regulaer CAI? It is still up there and can get wet. I am also sure that there are a lot of guys that do not drive their G/Z in the rain so this would not be an issue in the first place for those guys.

I used 4 inch brake duct [ stuff used to channel cool air to your brakes ] Clamped it to the intake of the blower and ran it down in front of the front wheel well . Then I used a much larger K&N filter than what comes with the kit . The duct keeps its shape on bends . There is other duct out there that is much smoother on the inside and probably would have better air flow . Will be looking for some in the future

I did some research on this. turbohoses.com is located in the bay area som I went down there one day looking for some pieces to build an intake. What seemed to be the best option was a 3 1/2 coupler attached to the blower, then a 3 in. diameter steel tube connected to a 45 degree elbow with an inlet for the pcv attached to another 3 in piece of tubing that is attached to a K & N.

-OR-

If you want to pay to have a 3 in. piece of steel tubing bent, then all you need is the coupler and a filter. But you will have to drill a hole in the tubing for the pcv.

It didn't seem worth the trouble to me...

Ive got a 90 degree 3.5 id silicon intercooler hose on order. Once i get that im going to add a pipe with a fitting down and across the fmic. So basically the filter will be on top of the i/c. The fitting will be the same od as my greddy bov to recerculate and get rid of any bov whistle/noise.

This can be done. I know because I had the Vortech and the only thing stopping me was the front support. Well now I have the APS TT and you have to cut a hole for the intercooler tube. This would be a perfect spot for the CAI on the Vortech.
