OK guys.. what's my solution? help.

my problem: i went to BUttonwillow raceway Config 13 CW today with a bunch of my co workers. 2nd lap out, my oil temps shoots up way past 240F, the highest i've seen in a while. I only used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 10w30, 6qts.

4th lap and my oil temp warning light and siren go on.. my oil temp is now 265F and i pull off immediately. Water temp was a relatively cool, 220F.. and hoved there all day while my oil temps soared and dropped.

I try my best to cool the car down. I use the misty mate to spray my power steering cooler, which was boiling btw, and to spray my intercooler.

i removed the front undertray and the oil temps were dropping fast, but not fast enough on the track.. i hit 260F repeatedly and came to pit.. which totally sucked.

i only have the PE finned oil pan as my only source of oil cooling..

track conditions were a bit tough. it was mid 90s F this afternoon!!

i was running on 50% 100octane, 50% 91 octane and my peak boost reached 8.8psi.

could it have been the race gas that made my engine run hotter?

any suggestions would be great.. i have a permacool oil cooler in my closet.. i think it's time to put that sucker in.

 

you need an oil cooler my friend - just give it some decent airflow and you'll be good to go

 

the arc underpanel helps.. the larger radiator helps a only a small amount, you will still need an oil cooler.. i saw around 120-125C pushing the Z hard at Fuji speedway - already have the arc underpanel, aps oil pan, and upgraded radiator.. will be getting an oil cooler.. next would be a vented hood if needed

I've also seen 260 F, at Road America, measured at the oil pan, on a 60 degree day. I'm not at all worried. Mobil 1 can handle 400 F according to Unitech Racing. If mine got to 300+, then I would add an oil cooler. I'm using a JWT oil pan spacer.

 

Based on your info, +2 on the oil cooler, dependent on capacity and location.

Hot oil isn't exactly bad, as some power is picked up as the oil thins. However, that being said, you may want to consider a thicker viscocity, like a 20w-50, 40w, 50w, if you are going to be on high temp, hi speed tracks. Even as the oil thins down with heat, the thicker oils offer better protection to the internal components. Just a little cheap insurance in the interim....

 

I have been using Mobil 1 15w 50, full synthetic, hottest days hit 238 or so after an hour of street highway and city with temps of 90 plus, I am considering a lamiar oil to water heat exchanger, this transfers heat from your oil to your cooling system, takes up less room, air flow is not an issue. http: 64.202.180.37/files/laminova.pdf check this out, good explaination.
With the PE kit, I just can't find a hassle free place for a traditional oil cooler, and they still don't help much if you aren't moving.

 

No doubt, you need an oil cooler, but not the crappy Permacool type. Get a Mocal or Setrab or Earls. 19 or 24 row, 13" width with -10 lines. This will drop your temps 50° or more.

Perhaps a power steering cooler too.

 

IMO I wouldn't even consider tracking with FI without an oil cooler

...and a bigger radiator if you don't have one - i mean, why not?

and a vented hood

and 100% 101 octane

lol that's IMO anyway. When tracking, I don't wanna worry about crap except when to brake and turn etc

 

yeah... you need to go monkey **** on the cooling

oil cooler
thermostat
radiator
power steering cooler
vented hood

the more the better if you track the car

With those temps just after 2laps, you might also want to try a more hardcore oil. Like Motul 300V, 10w40 or Royal Purple Racing 41, or Redline 10W40 etc...

looks like i'll be headed back into the shop..

my bumper allows decent side venting to wherever.. im thinkin i can place the oil cooler right into the slot. just mounting it will be a biotch...

AND it looks like i'll be cutting up my cF stock hood to allow better ventillation..

i have a nice oil cooler I ended up not using! Has bypass valve, etc...

 

who sells an oil cooler for our application???? i heard that the nismo one is ridiculously overpriced...anything new and more reasonable..pls supply links

Try this http://www.batinc.net/mocal.htm Mocal 19 row w/ stainless lines and thermo, $330. These are universal kits so you'd need a custom mount but if tt you'd probably need that anyway.

 

the nismo one is really nice.. but pricey.. but it does include the thermobaric sandwich that allows the oil to flow when its at temperature.. but it *might* be a bit small for my TT application.. ill have to look into it.

well. i called around..
the Bline Racing oil cooler uses a Setrab oil Core, with no thermostatic opener.. which i think is ok.. but if it runs too cool. then i lose HP..

their core size is 10"x8"x2" and uses kevlar hoses... sounds like a really good deal... i spoke with John on the telephone, really nice guy. so i might look into that..

i'm going into Technosquare to measure the mounting points.. i'll most likely put it not inline with my IC or my Radiator. but in the side vent of on the left side of my bumper.

for my application, it was suggested that i run a large square shape rather than a long/narrow one..

 

I got the oil cooler sandwich adapter with thermstatic control for about $40. I then found a used 9.5" x 8" x 2.5" oil cooler with -8 AN fittings for $40 and some -8 an hoses for $25. I am fabricating brackets to go next to my I/C. If you know what to look for and can rummage through all of the crap, Ebay can be a good source for parts.
