Default Supercharger Belt Question:

How often do you guys have to tighten the sc pulley belt? Is it something that lengthens initially and then stops, or does it just continue stretching forever? If it eventually stops stretching, after how long does that usually happen?
thanx.

had a problem with my Vortech when i first got the kit...the belt that came with it stretched all of the time...changed to a thicker GATES belt and 15,000 miles later, no issues.

I have a Vortech. I've tightened mine once so far. It was squeeling a lot. I've had it for about 12,000 miles. It's starting to do it again, maybe cuz it's getting cold out? Not sure.

Go Gates and you won't have issues for a long time. The goodyear belt that comes with the vortech kit is terrible and stretched very quickly after my install. Gates is the answer...

i ran an ati for awhile also, at 15 psi. i went through 2 belts. the problem prolly stems from misalignment of the pulleys. if they are off even a degree or 2, it puts all the stress on just one side of the belt and will overheat and delaminate the belt. the gates belt that is used is the strongest belt that can be had in the width from any manufacturer. order 2 at a time and carry an extra with you and the tools to change it.

new belts will always stretch. usually a couple retightenings will be required no matter the manufacturer of the belt.

Default supercharger belts...

Its common for s/c belts to loosen up or snap. You have to re-tighten every once in a while, and belt replacement is common. I know for a fact that at 150mph the belt snaps on the stillen s/c kits, even with new belts. Heat is one of the biggest factors as it allows the belts to 'stretch' over(short) time, and thats when you keep on re-tightening. Mis-alignment, over tightening and poor belt drive systems usually also kill belts, too. Another remedy is to find the belt with the most ribs(wider), or made of a better material like that aramid stuff. Most belts that s/c kits use are generic universal belts that you get at Kragen. Thicker pulleys/belts when applicable can help. Look at the thick belts used on the blowers on muscle cars, those last longer than traditional 4 ribbed belts.

one thing my installer told me was that i shouldn't be able to twist the belt >90` when its on the pulleys. so i tightened it up, but my boost numbers on the zeitronix are still wonky: sometimes they are spot on, and sometimes ridiculously low. i know that boost on the sc is dependent upon rpm, but is it also dependent upon the rate of change of rpm? seems like when i accelerate more quickly, the boost numbers on my gauge are higher. also, does engine temp affect boost in any signif way?
