Default Upgrading the Greddy TD05H-18g

While I am in the middle of changing around my setup, I am been looking into possible upgrades for my turbos. I have around 20,000 miles of beating on these poor things, and I should probably rebuild them this time anyway, so I think an upgrade is in call.

My turbos are being shipped out next week. I am sending them to Forced Performance. They quoted me $1400 for the PAIR to be rebuilt and upgraded to TD06 blades.

Upgrading both the compressor and turbine blade is what they recommended to me, saying that blade speed would be better matched using both TD06 blades, and that makes sense to me. I inquired about upgrading the turbine housing to a 10cm, they recommended I not do that. They reminded me that I have TWO turbos and not one, and bringing them both up to 10cm would make them loose a lot of their response (increase lag). He said if I were trying to max out the turbos and run very high boost then it would be something to consider, but I am not looking to do that. I will be remaining under 25psi when I do that.

I inquired about changing to a water cooled housing, he said that it could be done for more expense, but probably not worth it. Ball bearing turbos RELY on the water cooling to be there to help absorb the thermal load. Mitsubishi turbos, like ours, are not designed expecting water cooling.

I asked about reliability of the upgrade, stating that I have had trouble with rebuilds in the past. He reminded me of their excellent reputation on trouble free rebuilds which I have heard of for years. He also told me that is confident that they rebuild the turbos to greater specification then they most likely are from the factory, because they give each turbo more attention during the balancing process.

They told me to expect a few hundred RPM loss in turbocharger response. If thats all it really is, I certainly will not mind. If you have ever seen the dyno graph from a high HP supra or 4G63 car... to have my powerband kick in 500rpm later still leaves me room to have a great looking graph and powerband.

The last thing I asked about was efficiency of matching TD06 blades to the TD05 housings. He told me they have put TD06-20g internals in even smaller housings before and had great results, and that I shouldn't worry about it.

The guy sold me in about a 5 min phone call. I know a LOT about turbocharging cars... but these guys live and breath turbos all day every day, so I take their advice to heart over anything that I may speculate.

Sounds awesome. I had thought about trying to get 20g wheels put in as well and what it would do to the power/powerband. Look forward to good results...

I talked to these guys last year about it, but it didn't exactly have my name written all over it last year. Now its time.

BTW he told me a few guys have already sent him some 350z turbos... so some of the lurkers or builders here are already up to something

Yeah Robert and Crew at Forced Performance know their stuff

I have done the upgrade on the 300zx TT Greddy TD05-16G turbos to TD06-20G turbos through Forced Performance several times with Awesome results. I think this upgrade will work great on the 350z kit.

Did you give you an idea of how much more airflow this mod will create at a given pressure ratio?

No I didnt ask... I am not really into the calculator business, I put my money where my mouth is and I just do it and see what works! Those theories are all great, but its rare then I see anyone accurately predict what will happen, nor is it common that I see people actually using the equations correctly with any true understanding of what exactly it is they are calculating!

I will let you know how it works, but being that they have already done a few sets for others, someone else might meat me to it! It wasn't you, was it, Shariff?

I agree, if it worked on the 300zx kit that used the smaller TD05 compressor housings, it should work even better on our TD05H's that have a more TD06 sized compressor housing to match.

So, after 20k miles the turbos need to be rebuilt or whats the story with that. I beat on mine and i have 18k but nothing seems to be wrong so how long are these turbos supposed to last. Also I have the APS kit.

mine do not NEED a rebuild, but I am doing it before they do.

Turbos are inconsistent, and race cars need to be properly maintained. I am doing it because my dear turbos deserve it.

turbos can last between 10,000 and 100,000 miles depending on use and luck.

Haha...no...it wasnt me. I am going to max out the TD05's first...then move on to turbo upgrades with the new Darton block.

I agree that compressor maps dont tell the whole story, but just curious if he mentioned the airflow improvement by going with this setup. You have to use some airflow guidlines to make a turbocharger selection...just thought he might have mentioned it in conversation.
