Cheston: I just installed my Mocal thermo sandwich the other day. I wanted to show you what I went ahead and did.

We decided to take out the stock cooler/exchanger. I do fear that my oil temps may take a tad longer to get up to optimum temp, but I really have been on this engine bay organization spree, and I just wanted to ditch it and related lines for the sake of making space for servicability. I will report back on oil warmup time.

So notice that the factory exchanger is gone here. We just made 2 small parts on the lathe to allow the mocal unit to be a direct replacement for the stock with perfect fitment.

I used to run the same greddy spacer as you also, I had it for my temp sensor and oil feed lines. I never liked brass T's so thats why I made new oil lines for my Greddy kit. I changed it around again because I didnt like that I was sending my turbos unfiltered oil (the outside area of the spacers are unfiltered). Still not liking the T's and what-not, notice I tapped the oil pan pressure channel for feed for my turbos. This is on the filtered side and also after the oil has been cooled by the cooler.

Later I will post to show you where I moved my oil temp sensor (to reflect oil temps POST cooler) since where I had it before (same as yours) is pre-cooler.

I am going to try and run the lines this weekend and fire up the car. I dont think I will have a oil cooler setup quite as nice as yours, but ill post some pics.

Hey phunk, FYI Nissan Motorsports makes a sandwhich adaptor that replaces the factory oil warmer and has ports for an oil cooler. Basically the same thing you did but without having to machine anything. Its $95 retail. Heres the part number: 15238-E1120

Thanks,

thats pretty cool, i'm contemplating the same thing right now if i should just get rid of the stock exchanger, but i live right next to the ocean, and climate here is pretty cool majority of the year (compared to when i used to live in the Mojave) please let me know your average warm up times!

i always wondered what the delta was on the before/after the oil cooler. i've since learned to live with the oiltemp sensor as is. and using it as a forewarning and raised my oil tem gauge warning to a point where i thought would reflect my temps. how big of a core did u use?

I am going to try and run the lines this weekend and fire up the car. I dont think I will have a oil cooler setup quite as nice as yours, but ill post some pics.

good luck! thanks for the picts! ftw!

Chebosto,

If you want to read temps after the cooler, you just need to swap positions of the sandwiches. If you have the greddy sandwich between the filter and the mocal sandwich, those will be post cooler temps.

Ill keep that in mind for future reference, thanks. Does it have a built in thermostat tho? I doubt it matters much, but this Mocal one doesnt flow all the oil to the cooler until its up to temp - of course to help speed up the process of getting to operating temp. I wonder if the nissan one has that?

Hmm, thats a good question. I haven't ordered one yet and the Nissan Motorsports Catalog didn't have much info on it. I think Speed Force Racing has used them. Maybe TurboTim can answer that.

Thanks,
I will post more when I am compelted with the new setup in a few days. Unfortunatly there is a big snowball effect here... I have changed so much stuff to make more space for everything that lots of the stuff I changed probably cannot be done just one at a time... if that makes sense.

i faintly remember Skrill telling me that it wasn't thermobaric... it was part of their oil cooler kit if i recall- dang. maybe i should PM him to double check... he works (-ed?) for Nissan before they moved out of Torrance..

It is here for <$100. Doesn't say if it has a thermostat, but it looks like the Mocal.

Phunk, any updates on how the temps are going without the factory oil cooler (or warmer).

the oil warmup appears to be identical as far as i can tell. there is no substantial wait for the oil to come up to temp even with the factory exchanger removed.

my front mount oil cooler is currently behind my intercooler, i wanted to give it a shot back there. so far its doing a slightly better then stock job of coolign the oil. nothing exciting, but the oil has yet to get nearly as hot as it used to on a bad night. for now , i have no intentions on changing the setup. we will see this spring when i start doing testing for my 200+ mph run video. i might use a larger core or put another one of the same size in there.
