I was told to only use it in emergencies as most of them leave residue on the spark plugs or something like that.

I think that is only the ones that contain lead. Lead based octane boosters are IMO the best and cheapest, but if used too much, it will destroy catalytic converters and will leave deposits in your engine. Some claim that these deposits will actually EXTEND engine life as they tend to cushion valve seats (in fact, old engines did not have hardened valve seats because they DEPENDED on lead deposits). However, I would imagine that such deposits, much like carbon build-up, would be a good place for detonation to start so it should be avoided in FI cars.

I read an article in a tuner mag a while back .They did a test on some of the best octane boosters . They said most octane boosters you buy at the parts store are garbage . They may raise octane...by maybe 0.1 Thats point [1] Not [1] point . I cant remember the mag or the boosters they said were the best . They aslo compared the boosters to toulene

Nitrous Express makes a very nice and safe Octane Booster called Chemical X. They have have one for FI, Nitrous and NA....I used to use the Nitrous one when I was still spraying and it really worked

Exactly, only when 93 or better is not avaliable and being FI in Cali I don't recommend running 91 all the time as the difference in quality between batches can be bad for your 91 tune. I believe the gas is very important and you should stick to the same station if possible.

ya if you read the very fine print on the can of whatever octane booster you grab, and it says it bumps octane 7 points. that is 0.7 of one point, not turning 91 octane into 98!! after i saw that, i figured not even worth the money at all, plus leaving deposits in the motor.

I think you are wrong. The boosters that leave deposits (i.e. lead based) give your octane more of a jump than that. I read the bottles of a whole bunch of them when I was in pep boys once and that one really stood out.

i was hoping for the best also. i grabbed the most expensive one, and the one that had the highest octane boost rating, and that is what it said. 7 full points, which would make you think 91 to 98, nope, in the finer print, it said only 0.7 of one point. not worth the money for $10 a pint or more imo.

The article in Sport Compact Car tested a few, only two really worked and they both got 91 up to 92.7 or something like that.
