Default Turbo setup for Drift and track abuse...

Hey

I have a 05 350Z and am getting closer to getting a F/I setup. This is my daily driver, which I also use for track events...at least once a month. I personally would rather go turbo than S/c b/c of the TQ curve. With that said, I haev been researching different turbo systems for the past 2 years on this and other Z forums. I have two big decisions in my mind to make:
1) Single turbo VS. Twin Turbo
- I know this has been covered, b/c I personally have read many posts on it. But, I would like to hear more on this pertaining to people who track their car(Drift, autoX, road course)

-Quick question about single turbos...since I have the HKS dual Ti exhaust, I will obviously have to fab a reverse Y pipe. Will this change the sound of the exhaust? The sound of the exhaust is a huge reason why I shelled out the money and waited soo long for it. So I dont want to end up having to change it and not liking how it sounds with a single turbo setup. Let me know what you think on this matter.

2) Boost with stock internals VS beefier internals (a basic buildup - rods/pistons)
- I know this has also been covered, but again, I would like to hear more on this pertaining to those who track their car. It seems like the stock internals have been pushed to their limits lately...seeing some hit up to 500rwhp on stock block. But the question is how long will it last at those levels, and do those who have pushed the envelope track their car heavily.

My main reason for question two is b/c I know if I build it the potential quickly jumps up to 500-600 rwhp based on other supporting parts. But, I dont need more than 400-450...maybe 500 MAX, just to have fun every once in a while. But I would be more than happy with 400-450rwhp. It seems like most people can get by on a stock block at 400-450hp. But, would the internals be able to take the stress of a drift event at that level. I dont want to pay an extra $3000-4000 for a engine build up and not use it to its full potential. But at the same time, I need the reliability and peace of mind.

BTW, I FULLY UNDERSTAND that reliability has a huge relation with installation and tuning. Which of course, I will be driving or shipping the car to a highly regarded VQ tuner.

I know there aren't many people who drift their car on this forum, but I really need some help deciding on what I should do. Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated!
thanks

The sound of your exaust will be quiteter with a turbo setup no matter what configuration you end up doing.

I track the crap out of my car and after doing some research I decided to go with the JWT TT kit on a built motor. They use smaller water cooled ball bearing turbos that spool up really fast so you don't get out of boost when at the track.

You should PM WA2GOOD or VRT and they can give you some really good advice on tracking a 350Z with a twin turbo kit. They track their cars a lot and thats the main reason I had them do my install.

Oh, you can also check out the thread I have linked in my signature. Its about my entire track buildup.

put it this way..
i've seen a lot of tt and supercharge guys
go to drift and blow motors..
if u want a bulletproof bottom end
get internals/ get tuning/ and get a baffled oil pan...

arc now makes one but it is like 700 dollars
sheesh

If you are planning to drift the hell out of that car I would do Forged Internals. Chebosto doesn't but he's a wild man

i drift / track my PE TT Z quite often. as long as you have a good tuner, there shouldnt be any issue with blowing up your engine (i.e. i did all of this w/o a piggy back/stand alone fuel system.. just my stock ECU reflashed) i was also using stock internals for all those track days, but i'm building it up now(just pistons/rods/injectors) for bigger boost & reliability.... however keep in mind that you'll need coolers to keep your engine temps nominal, reguardless of FI or NA @ the track...

baffled APS or PE oil pan is like $5xx i think, not that bad of an option.
i havent seen anyone drift a ST Z yet... but i would assume there might be some slight turbo lag compared to a TT setup.

Actually theres a couple ST drift cars out there. Two Turbonetics ones for sure..

yeah but TT is better setup for the great throttle response and power....

Thanks for the help guys..

Yea, I am still considering going single turbo for 2 reasons. 1) Its about the price of a S/C but with a better TQ curve. 2)It is significantly less than most complete TT kits that would be comparable.

As to the forged internals...Im still debating whether or not its worth the money, or woth the risk. Obviously I don't want to blow the motor...But, I was possibly thinking about getting a turbo kit and just running really low boost to get around 375rwhp, and just try and keep it at a safer HP range. But, Im still curious even at that amount of HP, how well it will hold up at the track.
In conclusion, I guess its really all up to speculation. I know that there are soo many variables that can lead to blowing the motor when going f/i....and im sure doing hard track events like road race and drift will increase that risk.

I wish there was a middle road between low boost(350-400hp) on stock block and an engine build (400-600hp). I just afraid if I dont build the motor, my engine is going to be a ticking time bomb.

Can anyone give any hard factual evidance of choosing one route or another? Maybe some insight on how many people track their car on a stock block w/ turbo, and has done a compression test after 6-12 months???

also, as for the HKS exhaust and turbo...
I know that the turbo will quiet down any exhaust. I know this from previously turbo'd cars. I wasn't referring at all to the sound level. I was talking about the tone of the exhaust itself. I have heard the clips of Jaki's car with the Greddy TT and HKS ti exhaust and it sounds wonderful. I would like mine to sound similar. But, If I go single T, and fab a reverse Y pipe, will this change the tone of the exhaust and the way it sounds drasticly?

i've been running the greddy tt kit on my car for a few events now, and we have had pretty good luck with it. the only real problem arose when it starves for fuel in corners because it pumps it out of the bucket too fast. we added a second pump just to fill the bucket for the walbro pump to then send it to the engine.

radiator will need to be upgraded, same with power steering cooler ( use a full sized oil cooler ), i used a fuel return system, and had it reflashed to get everything on the ecu, then fine tuned with the greddy by sgp. everything seems to work great.

if your drifting, prepare to increase your tire budget considerably : )

here is a vid of my car drifting this weekend, @ 8psi, 400 ish to the wheels. quit watching half way as we were having issues with the second fuel pump messing up and killing all the power to the car. by the end, i can barely coast the car off the track. the wiring was grounding out in the tank and causing headaches, but its all better now and i will be in lousiana for a drift event this weekend.

time will tell if the motor blows, but i really don't want to build it for multiple reasons. i don't want to hurt the off boost power that the higher compression motor gives, i don't need more than 400whp at the moment as any more will probably start causing reliability issues with axles, tranny, ect. in drift mode, the car will easily over power the tires @ 100+mph, in 4th and 5th gear. ( remember in drifting your moving the weight around so the rear spin much easier ) 4th gear manji is badass.

nice video aaron!

This might be another common question, but how are the spool differences between each turbo kit, including singles and twing.(Generall speaking, similar boost, mods, etc, etc..comparing apples to apples) I have found alot of dynos, but nothing too close to each other. Also, I know that dynos can very b/c of all the variables, so if anyone can chime in on there spool characteristics from a driving point of view instead of dynos graphs, it would be greatly appreciated! (boost starts, and when reaches full boost, as well as holding to redline, or tapering off characteristics...)

Boost has a lot to do with turbo size. The smaller the turbo, the quicker it spools up. In reality all the turbo kits are pretty close together when it comes to spooling time, but for right now, the JWT TT kit has the smallest turbos and spools the quickest, that I have seen. Naturally, the larger single turbos will boost the slowest. There is more to it than that though, but I don't consider myself a turbo expert so I will just point out the obvious and leave the technical stuff to the professionals lol.
