Question Coolant and Oil Temperature - How hot is too hot?

I am in the process of setting up my DEFI VSD concept and it occured to me that I have no idea what constitutes HOT coolant and oil temperatures in our cars. Does anyone have a definitive answer on how hot is too hot for coolant and oil for a FI VQ35?

Thanks in advance.

Coolant should be about 205° with the stock thermostat, depending where you mount the sensor. I would not want to see coolant above 220° after very hard driving.

Oil temps should be kept below 250° during hard driving. Oil tends to hover around the temp of the water, so unless your running it hard at the track, your oil temp will usually be pretty close to water temp(Unless you have an aftermarket oil cooler)

thanks for the info, i heard exact same thing you did. i usually drive my z like i do my old honda! Straight reved out ready to go! so 4-5k on the street constantly is always where my motor stays at! I just bought some defi gauges to monitor my oil temp, soo i will install it this weekend and then monitor it! if temps go to high ill end up guying a cooler.

Congrats! You are one of the VERY few to want to see if they need an oil cooler before installing one to see if they need to reduce their temps!

FWI....300 degrees F at the track is ok if you are using a quality oil. I like Mobil 1.

I watch my coolant and oil levels pretty closely. I don't like to see my coolant get much above 200 F. As for my oil, 220 F would be as high as I would ever care to see it.

At idle, your coolant temp will be around 195 degrees, give or take. After a hard pass, its not uncommon to see 210-220 degrees. After 225, I would stop....and upgrade your cooling system. FYI: The factory temp gauge doesnt even budge until 225 degrees or hotter....its completely worthless.
