Default Which clutch for 600+whp

Hi,

I'm at the edge of deciding for a clutch to my 350z but can't figure out what to buy. The car is in the shop now getting installed the built motor and some other stuff. What I'm looking for is a clutch that can handle the power of ~600rwhp. I don't like launching the car but i do care about the drivability of the car coz this is my dailydrive and also i'm stuck in the traffic everyday.

I'm leaning towards ATS Twin disc carbon clutch w/ heavy flywheel and 1350kg pressure rated.

Cheers

Default Ats

I have the ATS Triple Disk 1350 and it's slipping bad in 4th. ATS is saying I didn't break it in correctly and that they never meant it to be used for the Drag Strip! I'm going to try it again this weekend with some ideas from ATS and will then pull it and inspect per ATS. I'm already looking elsewhere to have one made.

i had the exact same problem with my Exedy hyper twin carbon in my WRX. They also told me that it was because of not making the break in of the clutch. This is common for carbon clutches. If the break in period was not done right and the clutch slips even once that is enough to harm the clutch. You need to resurface the plates imho.

JWT has several race spec clutches, their heavy duty street which is rated at 500ft lbs. has lasted longer and up to 600+ft lbs. on some cars. I think i will have a JWT street/strip clutch made as im very pleased with the driveability, performance, and reliability of my current one.

i guess the pedal feel of a HD single disc clutch might be too stiff for me.

I have 25K on my kit with the JWT Street clutch and have had not problems with hard launches or drag racing. Alot of it is driver ability too, cuz some of my friends have killed their JWT clutches.

I have the RPS street clutch which is capable of holding 4-450 ftlb of torque. This IMO is the best street clutch and mostly feels like stock.

I am impressed with the feel of my spec 2+. Very drivable and is rated at 525tq. Not saying this is the clutch to get, just that it is a very viable option that not many bring up.

As far as big HP like the originator of the thread asked about, I have heard mixed reviews about the ATS setups. Some swear by them, and some say they slip - like mjedens stated. Proper brake in is a must no matter what setup you choose. I believe Marin is running a JWT setup at a reported 700+ whp without issue. Others are eating them up at near 400whp/tq. This comes down to two things IMO - break in and driving conditions/styles.

It's also about what type of pressure plate it has. A six puck solid hub will take just about all you can give it. It will be stiff. A six puck sprung hub should be a bit softer and handle 700+trq.

I'd call Tilton for a custom setup. They are the most knowledgeable engineers. They also underrate their clutches to 2/3 of their full potential. It's worth a phone call, at least.

I didn't break in my clutch; the shop did at the same time they broke in the motor. What is the proper way to break in a triple disc carbon clutch? (ATS)

prolly your clutch had break in at the same time with your engine. there is nothing special for the break in of the clutch. the general rule of thumb is to drive it for 300-400 miles in city traffic in granny style.

I have used many JWT clutches with 500+ WHP. I burned their single side racing clutch with close to 700 WHP on the dyno the other day, however, have since put their twin.

Call JWT and get their best. It will hold the power.

my JWT clutch is acting funny, i think its slipping. while racing, when i shift gears, i can feel it hesitate for a few seconds, and then it finally kicks in, kinda like an EBC retarding boost.
