Default timing chain removal

i finally got my new crank key in today an i see that you have to take the timing chain off and the sprocket off to put the key on. my question is how do i get the chain off and how do i reset the timing. also does the sprocket slide off or do i have to get a puller to it. hopefully after a month i can finally have my car back so i really need some help.

i heard there is a site you can download from the service manuals. way to hard to list every step here, but i will try-

1. remove all the front stuff
2. install new part
3. put back together
4. start it up and drive fast!! hahha

lol, honestly, a service manual on cd or downloading the needed pages is really the only way to go. with patience and following the service manuals to the word, you should be fine. oh ya, don't expect to do this in an hour or 2.

I think this may be a dealership job, or a really really reliable local speed shop to do this.

...anyways...here's the ESM for the non-35th anniv. 350z (05+).

Good luck!

Timing chain removal/installation is not for the faint of heart, and really cant be explained over the internet. I cant even imagine doing this with the engine still inside the car, but I know it can be done....right Scott?

The service manual will walk you through the process. Best of luck to you.

i've got the timing cover off now and this weekend i'm going to try and take the chain off. my mail concern is the sprocket rather it can just slide off or i have to get a puller to it.

thanks man hopefully i can just release the tension on the chain and it will come right off. do you still have to set the timing. if so can the dealership do this with the cover back on.

You need to remove the large tensioner on the left side of the motor. The timing cover has to be off in order to re time the motor.

So what is your plan? Are you planning on changing out that crank key, and then having your dealer put the timing chain and verify position?

Really simple question here, but isn't the key visible once you remove the crank pulley? So why dont you just pop it off, without removing the timing covers and chain? The key just sits in a grove on the crank.

it has to fit inside the sprocket. the key is a half moon shape and so is the grove in the crank. i tried to put it in but with the sprocket on it didnt want to go in. it looked like you would have to take the sprocket off and put the key on and the sprocket back on.

Ah, you are correct. The bottom sprocket is aligned with that key, so the sprocket needs to come off first. You will need a pulley puller, in order to remove that sprocket, BTW.

the key some how came out when idleing about a month ago. the crankshaft and the sprocket line up and the key connects them so that the gears turn. without the key the crankshaft just spins.

How did the key come out? The sprocket is pressed onto that key. Barring an act of God, the key cant come out.
