Default Thought I was done, ugh, machine shop mistake

There's a good sized ding/dent in the cyl. wall including the top (sealing surface against the head gasket) - and as you can see from where the finger is on the last pic, it looks like they whacked it twice and tried to file it to hide it.

I won't mention who did this until everything is sorted out, but to say the least I'm pissed that instead of being done in about 2 weeks, my car will be lucky to be driven this summer

Wow...that's messed up. It looks like a stress fracture rather than a dent from the inside cylinder shot. Is that even fixable?

Have you talked to them about it? Are they going to help you out? I guess you need a new block done? I dont see how that could be fixed...good luck.

That definitely doesn't look safe. They should pay for a new block...

woah...that doesn't look like it will come out with a 3 thousandths redecking...
when you get things all sorted out, you can always sleeve that block and keep it as a back up...

How many thousands will have to be removed to flaten that ding?

Or is the block a loss.. Maybe adding Sleeves would be a better way out.

Any one in the trade have an "Everyday Fix" for this?

Cheers Amy -

If 3 thousandths of material removed in the redecking process doesn't completely remove the mark, the block should not be used...the cylinders will be removed anyway if the block is sent out to be sleeved..so as I said above, that will be a viable option, not a total loss...I would be very weary of any other "fix" that anyone offers, as that would not be a risk that I would want to take...

good luck

it is kinda hard to see exactly what is going on in the pic. it looks different in the different angles. my guess is also that they did it with the ring install. when ever i have a block bored i ask for a very slight rounding of the top of the bore to ease ring install. but who knows, maybe it just fell over on something. hard to tell exactly from the pics.

In the first picturem the cylinder wall looks cracked? But in the other pics, it doesnt. It's really hard to tell by these pics. What REALLY shocks me is that a machine shop would actually hand you this block in damaged condition.

Sharif, I know this kind of stuff shocks you and other shop owners like you. You give a good gawd d@mn about your products and your customers. Unfortunately, there are folks out there who either don't know what good service is, or don't care whether they provide good service or not. Honest mistakes are made, but I'm still interested in seeing how this shop handles the resolution process, now... Good luck with that!

I showed our machinist these pics this morning, he laughed in disgust...he stated that he has had situations where an accident has occured, damaging a customer product, he will replace the product so that the customer isn't stuck with a substandard motor...
I hope the machinist didn't knowingly give the motor back to you like this, maybe his part runner did it..(I hope, for the sake of his integrity)

the machine shop stepped up, I'll have everything taken care of tomorrow... just needed a quick decking and the small blemish was over 300 thousands above the rings' highest reach... sucks that it happened somehow but at least it's not a HUGE delay.

wasnt it redecked to begin with? if they remove even more material, the cams will need to be degreed and your compression ratio will be higher...
how many thousandths total will they remove from the stock configuration?
