which kirk racing roll bar are you guys getting? the one with the X brace, or the one that goes straight back?
Do you drive the car on the street a lot?
how's the rear view with the X brace?
Has anyone ever weighed the roll bar - how heavy is it?
just how much stiffer does it feel? Is the added stiffness worth the added weight?

Bottomline is that connecting 5 points to the chasis should not take as much time as intalling a twin turbo kit...

I know I charge 75 a bend + the amount for tubing + 175.00 set up fee + per weld fee and instalation . really no money in it for shop to build just one. Now if you are making minimum 10 then we can start to cut the price

My point is once all these guys that are building up their engines start dragging it they will be 11.49's and better. I think we will see a few low 11's hogh 10 Z's in the next year
It was stated it's only worthwhile if it's 10 or more, you don't think we could get 10 fast Z's together for some kind of group buy for roll bars?
I think the problem is that there are only custom shops so far that do the bars. If they would be readily available people would buy them
I guess only time will tell

I read the NHRA rules on Roll Bars. They require:
1.75" od x .118 wall mild steel
Minumum of 6" from roll bar to driver head
Maximum of 5" form top of roll bar to attachment to rear brace
Roll bar must attach to frame or have 6" square x 1/8" steel mounting plates w/ 3/8" bolts
Must have a 5th point on the drivers side
The Kirk Roll bar for the Z:
1.75" od x .120 wall mild steel
The rear braces are attached to the top of the hoop
The 6" depends on where you place your seat.
I don't know about the mounting plates, yet SCCA and NASA rules only require 3 - 5/16" bolts for each 3/16" thick mounting plate.
And the Kirk doesn't have the 5th point.
The funny thing is NHRA doesn't have the rule on triangulation of the main hoop, which is the most important thing on any roll bar.
Call Kirk - I bet a slight modification to their design and you are in business. And theirs only cost $350 for the Z.

S & W Racecars has a few listings for the 350Z. The did the bending for my custom 5 point in my Maxima and I did the fabrication and install. They are outside of Philly so the DC folks are in luck. Cost should be under $300 for the hardware.

Ive since put in a racing seat and soon a new steering wheel. The bar is mild steel because I have a mig welder, CM needs to be TIG welded. Im trying to run consistent mid 10s this year so Ive stripped out most of the interior A/C, open exhaust, etc. The bars are welded to the 6x6 metal plates then bolted through the floor to another 6x6 plate on the bottom side. The rear runners and bent so they go straight back along the roof line and donut bend down until the rear window and go in to the trunk area through the rear deck.Their are two types of padding on the bar, NHRA requires SFI approved padding anywhere the drivers helmet may impact the bars. I also put additional padding because I still take my kids for rides occasionally . If your fast enough for the bar you also need the 5 point harness, single layer fire jacket and SA helmet.

thanks for calling them, I wanted to today but got sidetracked.
I think you height will be an issue no matter what.
so what you're saying they have the z roll bar for 179 in mild steel and the 399 is made out of chrome?
Swing out kits are for the driver and passenger sidebars?

thanks for clearing that up.
I'll call them on wednesday, probably will get the roll bar + the conversion kit since it's on sale and that way later on I don't have to buy anything else when it's time for a cage.
Now I just need to find a place that can do the install
