Cool Help on driving with a turbo.

I recently purchased an APS TT Kit and am currently having it installed. I am just a little hesitant on driving the car again...Is there anything i should know about driving a boosted car, i've drove my buddies boosted STI before, but its nothing like what i would be running in mine. So i have a couple of questions.

1. Is it safe on the highway for extened periods of time..if i kept in in 6th gear for hours on end..what would happen??

2. Should i only drive it hard when racing..or is it okay to have some fun at the odd red light?

thats all i can think of for now. if theres anything else lemme kno. i've been searching here and the net for hours and couldnt find anything.. any help would be super.

Thank Guys

The APS TT kit feels just like stock with a bit more power during everyday driving. Once you floor it it takes off very smoothly

Make sure you invest in some decent tires because you will need better traction with the new power.

You'll love it, nothing to worry about

Just like mrtomcat said get some decent street tires for DD and have fun with your new found power.

No you should not be staying in boost for hours on end. This is not a race car and it is not meant to be one.

Realistically you shouldn't be in boost for more than a 10 second stretch or so and that's really pushing it as a daily driver.

Oh don't listen to this guy, don't let him scare you. Your car is being setup and tuned to run with it's new turbo setup. As a daily driver, you should be fine. I wonder why you would spend that kind of money and not know what you're getting into, but to each his own. You really don't have much to worry about, just drive normal like you usually do. If you want to push the car a little, do it. Just do it legally.

DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its really not to much of a difference...no boost is pretty much like it was N/A and when you are in boost it will be more powerful but nothing insane that you would wreck. Dont go drifting or lets see what happens in the rain. Best thing to do is just drive it and get the feel.

It's safe to be in 6th for hours as long as you are not boosting. Boosting in
6th puts a lot of load and stress on the motor. I drive in 6th all the time, but hardly boost there. If you are in 6th and need to pass someone just down shift.

So how would this be on a 5AT? When you get on it, it will downshift automatically, therefore boosting in high gears will be avoided. In other words, it is a good match for a 5AT, right?

The 5AT with a turbo kit is not the greatest setup. The transmission is set up for smooth shifting not performance shifting. A valve body upgrade will be a necessity to really enjoy your car.

A valve body is a given. So is a tranny cooler, maybe even a temp gauge to keep an eye on the tranny fluid temps. But otherwise?

This is what I am referring to:

With a decent valve body upgrade the tranny will downshift as soon as I hit the gas while cruising in fifth, so boosting in high gears would not be an issue, right?
And now I am totally confused. The APS, JWT, they all make full boost by 3K anyway, so technically I will be cruising at full boost, right...
This makes me more and more lean towards a blower...

depending on the turbo kit you have at a certain rpm level, usually around 3000 and depending on how much throttle you give the turbos start spooling up - hence boosting. The boost pressure goes up till you reach the tuned level, example 9 psi.
then your body starts pushing adrenaline and you feel your lips going into a smiling shape that won't go away until you take your foot of the pedal

Until a sporadic BOOM and a piston rod shooting though the side of the block. At which point your lips got from to and later to

boosting in top gear is never a good idea. As mentioned earlier you stress the engine alot more, and also you pour alot of heat into your pistons. A non forged piston are very vulnerable to this, compared to a forged piston.
Look at it like this: when you get on it and boost, you pour heat into the pistons like if you pour water into a funnel. When you shift gears the piston will cool down, like when you stop pouring water into the funnel, the water level will sink. If you stays on it in 6th gear it will be like keep pouring water into the funnel - eventually the water will come over the top.. if you keep boosting in top gear you will put too much energy into the piston.. WAY more than a non forged piston will take.

If you read what I wrote I said he should not be in boost for a long time.

I suppose you and I are basically telling him the same thing that as a daily driver it's OK. However I don't understand why you would disagree with my comment about not driving it like a race car...........who the hell stays in boost that much on a daily driving situation beyond 10 seconds? Come on if he's boosting and in for more than 10 seconds more than likely he's going to be doing over 100 miles an hour.

I am about to have another one of my signature nervous breakdowns. Once again, I am at the point at which I want nothing to do with my Z FI-wise.
Now I have this "load" crap to consider.
IS THERE A SINGLE ******* SUCCESS STORY WITH BOOSTING A 5AT CAR???!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think his original question was can he for hours still drive in 6th gear, not can he drive for hours under boost in 6th gear.

And the answer is yes, you can drive as long as you want just as you drive today. Just don't overdue it under boost...

I'm not sure there would even be a place in the us where one could drive at wot under boost for hours, sonds like a magical place

So what is your opinion on a 5AT in this situation (provided that a quick-shifting VB is in place)?
