It should of lasted a while more longer, it isn't a Hyundai trans.

Sorry to hear about it Todd.

I'll be going with the GTM gearset very soon here...Sam can chime in and provide all of the details of this setup, this will be the ultimate end all for transmissions (I plan to run more power, it broke on low boost )

You did not actually break your tranny, well, yes and no. If you open up your tranny you will find everything intact! and it's acctually very easy to fix. We have had this problem with 2 high horsepower 350z's..

Note: all this is assuming you know how to open a tranny*

open tranny and take third gear out)service manual needed). You'll see the gear is composed of two sides, outer side (side with the teeth) and the inner side (side that goes in the shaft). Well here is the trick, Nissan made these two parts separate and then welded them. The weld is not strong and brakes so when you go into third, the gear engages but runs freely on the shaft and doe not move the car. When you take the gear out, you'll see that you can move fairly easy these two pieces. All you have to do is weld it and mount it back!

This is why it appears that third gear broke but you don't hear any grindin inside the tranny.

This info is going to cost you!

Thanks, good info! Sharing knowledge such as this really helps the community as a whole, and benefits everyone with an FI Z.

Now we need to get Todd to open his gear box.

at the time of the prblem, i felt tons of vibration, like going over speed bumps, ...no grinding, just tons of vibration, then no more 3rd gear, we'll open it up

so you have successfully done this???

Thanks

Yes, at first it seems like if the differential gone bad or something because of the vibration. We have had this situation 2 times, and both were fixed like I told you.

Both of the times it's happend to us were third. All gears work execpt third. Yeah, lots of vibration.
Just reweld 360 degrees around the gear on both sides (left & rigth)

it is only third gear??

as soon as i put this clutch in, i am going to be turning up the boost A LOT...

my car will be down for a couple weeks, maybe i should just weld this while i have the tranny out so i wont have this problem later on...

hey julian, is it your third gear also??

that is exactly what i thought, the vibration felt like a rear diff, and about 5 seconds later, it felt totally normal, everything works fine except 3rd gear...

so you welded all gears? why does nissan make these gears in two pieces and weld together? you would think they would make them a single solid piece for strength purposes..

so the factory welds broke cleanly? you didnt need to machine the gears down on the mating surfaces or anything? just pull them out and re-weld???

pm sent..ant tips you would like to share?

Thanks so much!!!
