Default The best turbo troubleshooting tool ever?

Who says smoking cigarettes is bad for your health? What does that have to do with the greatest turbo tool ever is what you are probably wondering. Simple........an intake pressure tester that I call the Smokonator(patent pending). It uses smoke from a cigarette which allows you to test for intake or exhaust leaks. It works so well, everyone that uses it is amazed. We pressure test all of our cars with this little device. It is amazing how many things leak on these cars as well as other cars. Now it is a nobrainer. The smokes just streams out of any leaks.

You hook it up to any vacuum line that runs to your intake manifold. For your exhaust you put a cap or tape off the exit of the muffler and then you run the smokonator into it.The smokonator uses a pressure regulator to pump the system with smoke and about 10 psi of pressure. You need an air compressor to use this device. It can be used on cars that do not run and this is how we suggest using it.One cigarette can completely fill up a 5.7L V-8 and we just pumped up a twin turbo 3.5L V-6 with smoke to spare. The nice thing about the cigarettes is that you retain the filter so it prevents ashes and debri from getting into your motor.I understand there are non smokers who find cigarettes offensive but consider this.....One cigarette and a few minutes to find a leak that otherwise could take you hours and hours of frustration(because I have been there just like everybody else) completely outweighs the fact that you have to smell a little second hand smoke(at least in my opinion).Any more questions? We are thinking of setting a price of about $49.95 for this unit with the pressure regulator(it uses the same MBC that some peopel use for boost control ),assorted fittings and vacuum lines.

We are actually having a bunch of these made so if anyone is interested, let me know. Here are some pics.

I guess a cigarette will work better than a doob... The doob will smoke just fine, but you'll forget why you were looking for smoke in the first place!

black and mild.. at least it smells like vanilla..

so are you sticking that thing into a intake tube and fill the itnake system with smoke and then look for smoke coming out of the car? what about the intake filter? do you have somehting to cap it off? otherwise the pressure won't hold obviously..

i had a boost leak tester on my 3000gt and it supplied a metal piece that you block the intake filter hose and then it has a connector on itfor compressors to connect and you just fill it up with compress air and listen for sound.. but i think your idea might be better.. using smoke should make it alot easier to see.. maybe in the future do different color smoke to make it even more visibile.

Cigarette smoke consists of small particles - can't be good for the motor, can it?

I would think just compressed air forced into the intake manifold with the intake and exhaust sealed off would do the trick - that and a little soapy water around various gaskets/joins...

Have you tried using this method for pressure testing the intake or exhaust, especially when you cant get a clear shot with your eyes and/or your spray bottle? It is almost futile. This is the method we use to use but it is so frustrating that more times then not we would give up. So we created this device.Works like a charm. No guessing, no frustration and no missing the actual leak. When this things is hooked up to your intake or exhaust and it fills the system with smoke and 10 psi of pressure, the leaks will be evident very quickly As far as the particles go.........we suggest keeping the filter on the cigarette as it filters out all the ashes and debris.

If you can make it work with a household pump/ bike pump i would def be getting one but i don't have access to a good compressor =o. do you really need the 10 psi ro force the smoke out? i would think any kind of pressure build up in it would cause the smoke to leak through and be visible
