You know when the company asks if you are gonna race your vehicle...If you install aftermarket parts is that assumed? Im just wondering if I should tell GEICO that I have Turbo and all....Ive been lucky so far and dont street race but things happen..
Wait so they asked you when you got insurance from them if you were going to race. How would they know you have aftermarket parts unless you tell them. I've never heard of a Co asking if you were going to race any car that is street legal
you might wanna tell them, in the case of an accident if your vehicle is totalled.. unless aftermarket parts are on your policy, more than likely they wont pay for them, and could use that to not pay on your claim.
Do not in any case tell them you will race it rates will skyrocket.
TELL them that you would like to insure it for cost of car+ turbo cost and list it as sentimental value or in some cases aftermarket parts if they have it, that's what i did for my stang thru aaa texas they were cool with it, insurance went up 2-5 bux a month or something and i added 2.5k in the insured value.
If you tell them you race they will assume it's greater risk and charge you arm and leg.

Yea its better to pay a little more to cover your mods than to save like he said maybe 10 bucks. Because if you wreck it you just lost 10k worth of stuff.
Even if you do race don't tell them because you will pay a huge premium and I'm not even sure if they would cover damages caused by racing especially if its street racing because thats illegal and negligent on your part

wow...everytime I added or removed a car under GEICO they always asked me if the car would be raced. Im surprised some of you never heard of that before. Yea I was just wondering if I should call GEICO and say "Hey I added a Turbocharger on my Nissan"
lol
lol
I wrecked my car and they covered the whole thing, it does not matter what you have it is all about how you speak with the claims adjustor. All you have to do is say you just finished the work and they should cover it....no one can be expected to tell their insurance co the second things are done. Just my $.02

Their is a reason insurance companies won't cover the accessories on some crappy caprise that's worth 1000 bux and the rims are worth 5x the value of the car. Since the person didn't tell them they won't cover it if it's stolen or wrecked.
Just thought i would share, happened to my friend a couple of weeks ago.

I added 15k of extra coverage in customization coverage, my rate went up 100 every six months. They asked me what I did to my car and I told them, no problem. I have farm bureau insurance though. They did ask me the "do you race the car?" question, my answer was of course now, the turbo was for on-ramp security, lol. It does help of course when you insurance agent owns a z06 corvette, though!!!

I told my insurance I had "aftermraket" parts and now I pay $20 extra/month and get an additional $5000 of aftermarket parts coverage-wouldnt even cover my damn block, but it may help with something one day...
progressive automatically covers $1000 worth of aftermarket parts free of charge, but offer addional coverage up to $10k
In my case, $10k of extra coverage was costing me an additional $360 for 6 months and I later decided to stop doing it since I pay something like $750-780 for 6 months of full 250k/100k coverage anyway - didn't seem worth a 50% price increase for what would really be 30% more coverage. And it'd only really apply if the car IS totalled. Chances are if I hit something and it was only a few thousand $ of damage, I'd just repair it myself anyway. And like I said, they cover $1000 for free anyway

I used to write the computer programs for AAA insurance that come up with the insurance rates. Don't tell them man, it's just a way for them to charge more on some **** that they otherwise could not. Insurance companies do this sort of thing a lot and many people fall for it. Don't tell them about any accidents or tickets, make them find for themselves. Many times this stuff won't show up. The raters will double charge for accidents or tickets if you tell them you had one and they cannot match it to one comming from the DMV report. This could be because the info you gave was a tad off. If you want lower rates say your yearly mileage is below about 7,500 miles per year admit to no accidents or tickets. If you have any bad drivers (ones with tickets or accidents) that live in your house and they are on their own insurance be sure to exclude them from the policy. Many companied match the highest rated driver to the highest rated vehicle to come up with the highest posible term premium, it doesn't matter which car you drive this is assigned from within the rater. Basically, tell them as little as you can and under estimate the mileage and even say the car is used for business purposes only, they have a seperate class for that that can lower the rates significantly. About additional coverage, many comapnies will give you about $1,000 custom equipment and parts coverage for free, you need to ask your specific carrier for this info so you may not need to buy any additional coverage. If you need more you will need to pay for custom equipment and parts coverage. The tiers on this coverage are related to the value of the parts you are covering. You need reciepts for all parts if you are going to collect and you may need to give them pictures for proof.

Whats the most anyone has been able to get covered on their cars in aftermarket parts? Anything over $10k? If you have reciepts for more work, would they cover all of it, even if its excessive?
Every vehicle I've owned for the exception of an 81 malibu 4 door beater car I've been asked about racing. I always tell them no I do not competition race but I may take it down the track once and a while. They have had no problems with that because I have a clean record.
On the aftermerket parts deal, I was wondering the same thing. When I'm done with the car the parts value will be the same price as the car was new. $27,000 already with the new engine being built and I still have a few odd and end things to do to finish up the car. So with that being said driving REAL carful until I get coverage on all my parts.
Im with USAA right now.
