Default Assembly cost of a Short block?

One of the options I was considering is buying parts each month Vs dumping all my coin at once. Anyone know the typical cost of assembly?? All parts provided. Also if I bought Darton mid sleeves, how much more could that be? I'm just trying to see what option would be better for me. If I did that I would send it all to one of the reputable builds on this site.

I'll be happy to provide a detailed/personalized quote for your power needs...

My recommendation:

The way that we price our motors is as follows: If you bought all of the parts yourself, and paid a local machine shop (who would probably machining this type of motor for the first time) to do the work, you would end up spending approximately $300-500 more..would have to handle all of the headaches yourself, and wait a few months- to several months

Our turnaround time on a custom built motor is now approximately 1-3 weeks, depending on the type of build

To answer your question...most machine shops charge approx.:
bore/hone: $200-300
redeck: $100-150
balance crank/micropolish: $200-300
machine block for 1/2" head studs: $500-650

redeck heads: $100-200
3 angle valve job/ clean/ rebuild/ adjust valves: $350-500
machine for half inch head studs: $100-150

assemble shortblock: $300-500
time otor: $350-500

The numbers I supplied are ranges from what I have dealt with, personally, with different machine shops in and out of the state...

We assemble our motors in house, all the machining is done locally...(accept sleeving- done at GT motorsports)

sleeving (with cost of sleeves) costs approx: $2100-2800 (depending on quality of machinery--> GTM uses a Rotler F65- the best in the industry for installing the sleeves flawlessly!)

A few BuiltZmotors quotes:

Shortblock:
and I quote:

First off, we recommend going with one of our longblock options, as we build our longblocks fully assembled with the heads torqued down to spec, the motor is timed with all timing gear installed, and the front and rear timing covers are in place. This makes the motor swap go very easily, saving you time and money having to pay to have the motor prepared for operation.
We also recommend the use of the Arias Extreme duty pistons in ALL of our builds. The piston costs more than the other forged pistons out on the market, but the strengths greatly outweigh the costs. Think of these pistons as added insurance to your builtZmotor!
Built bottom end consists of the following: Easily capable of 550 rwhp

Pistons – Arias Extreme Duty pistons 9:1 CR
Rods- Eagle
ARP main studs
rear main seal
main bearings
rod bearings
thrust washers
machine block- bore and hone (with use of torque plates)
balancing
polish crank
redeck block-(to ensure proper mating surface for heads)
clean parts- prep before assembly- clean oil channels, outer surface, etc.
“rev up” oil pump- 18% more efficient than the standard oil pump
motor assembly

Our price: $3450
+$1500 core charge (refunded when we receive your motor)
A few ways that we are different than some of the competition:
-we include ARP studs in our engine pricing (head studs with longblocks)
-we use Arias Extreme Duty pistons, good for extremely high power levels
-Our longblock package will come fully timed with front and rear timing covers installed. *(will save you time and money when swapping motors), simply pull off a few sensors and this one will be ready to drop in.
I’ll be happy to price out additional upgrades, let me know what you would like. We can omit certain upgrades to lower the costs and the price.

Call me with any questions: 505-480-1923 Todd Pickman, BuiltZMotors.com

Longblock Quote:

We recommend our longblock option, as it presents a greater savings to you. We sell all of our longblocks fully timed, with the front and rear timing covers installed, ready to go!

The following is a longblock with stock heads, feel free to inquire about any upgrades.

Pistons – Arias Extreme Duty 9:1 CR (estimated rating above 1300-1500rwhp!)
Rods- Eagle Rods
ARP hardware- Main and head studs—included (not sold extra like some other companies)
overhaul gaskets- every gasket new from Nissan
Headgaskets: stock (can upgrade)
rear main seal
main bearings
rod bearings
thrust washers
machine block (with use of torque plates)
balancing
polish crank
redeck heads and block- to ensure mating surfaces between the block and the heads are exact
clean parts- prep before assembly- clean oil channels, outer surface, etc.
oil pump- new from Nissan- recommended on a new motor build
Cams- stock
Headwork- none (can upgrade)
Valves- stock (can upgrade)
Springs- stock
motor assembly – timed, with front and rear timing cover installed
head assembly- rebuilt with new valve stem seals

Introductory price: $5100!!!
$2500 core charge (refunded when we receive your motor)

Hope that helps!

TODD

Todd is doing my engine. I added up all the costs including local machine work, I could of possibly saved 1000$ if that. It wasnt worth it to me, since he has experince with the vq35de and no one local to me does.

Well if you are able to, I think it would be beneficial to you to save the money and purchase everything at once from the same person, these are the reasons why I beleive so:

1. Its better to have everything done by one shop, so there aren't any issues to blame on someone else.
2. Since you are purchasing all the parts from them you should get a better price since you are helping them move more volume.
3. When doing everything from one shop who has everything you save time and will be guaranteed that everything is done right.

Hope this helps your decision let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks guys after reading your reply's it does not seem like a good idea for me to piece together a block. Im just gona hide money from wife and get a assembled long block. I did not realize all the attention that is required to properly assemble a block.

There should be a Men only bank

I think I am going to put some twins on and then start saving for the built block. Only a matter of time.

If you're still in Hawaii, ... I Highly recommend going to Vakamon Motorsports and talk to Ryan, ... tell him Sean sent you. He usually has a VQ block in stock that can be used as the 'core' for your build.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Yea I got some friends that deal with Vakamon and theres one member on here that is dealing with sonic for a Installation of a Longblock from BuiltZmotors. I dont know if im gonna do the install here or wait till I got back to Georgia. A lot of exciting things that are gonna be released for the VQ here shortly and I'd rather wait than rush. Hardest part is deciding what my power goal is. As soon as I see the GT-K results on paper I will be able to make a more informed choice, for example to sleeve or not.

His motor should have just arrived there yesterday!!! Check out the quality of the motor, then decide!

Oh I have no doubt the quality of your motors are great. I just need to figure out the WHP goal I'm after, and once the GT-K upgrade prices are disclosed I will be able to do that. Although 600WHP may be enough forever.
