Looking for a supercharger
Well I have done some reading here and there on these forums about different superchargers and turbos. From what I have read so far, it looks like a supercharger is what I should go with since I am using my z for an everyday driver. I currently have a stock z except for a stillen exhaust on it. I was thinking about going with a vortec supercharger. So to the point....can I safely put a vortec supercharger on my car without having to dump money into beefing up the engine and still get a good boost in hp and tq? What other things should I consider when getting this? I am new to the scene here so go easy on me. Thanks in advance.
you can put the vortech on a stock car - in fact out of the box that's what it's designed for.
You can easily make more power with it with some addional things. But it partly depends on how much more power you want and how you want that power to come at what rpms
I'd really really really research it to the fullest extent that you can before buying anything. There's recently been some threads comparing different FI kits and there's a whole mess of past threads dealing with them.
I have a vortech and am happy with it, but my setup is a whole world differnt than the stock out of the box kit. IMO I'm not sure I would have been happy with the out of the box setup on the stock car.

Thanks sentry. I am not going to buy anything for another few months since I am still wanting to learn all I can first. I will keep looking around here and see what I can find.
What upgrades do you think would be good for me to consider short of rebuilding my engine? Also, what boost would be safe for me to run on a stock block? I have seen some ppl say 12 is ok since you don't get maximum boost till almost at redline but I have seen others that say this will still damage your engine. What do you think about it?
I run part race gas with my 12 psi setup to prevent detonation. My thought process is the stock block has been proven to hold 500whp on an APS TT with race gas or water injection at least for some amount of time (think it was around 3 months) 500whp is pushing it though. That's running huge boost in the midrange on a car with the stock engine. Still if you detonate even a little with big numbers on the stock block, it's all downhill from there with blowing the engine. You'll get less warning
usually the vortech seems to chip piston rings before snapping rods in most cases. On bigger power setups, it might just go straight to snaping rods and ruining the block if a part of the engine was damaged from detonation or lack of oil etc. Hard to say though
some simple upgrades would be the 3.12 pulley, some high flow cats (or test pipes - you'd probably prefer resonated test pipes), intake plenum or spacer, exhaust, and possibly HKS ignition amplifier
tuning is a must.
You might eventually need bigger injectors and a bigger fuel pump depending on your power and tune.
for safety you might look into a bigger oil pan or oilpan spacer, oil cooler, slim koyo radiator (not the normal thick one) and of course gauges
Should be thinking about some better tires too
IMO the stock clutch works just fine for awhile, especially on a low/mid vortech setup. So I'd run that until it burns up

What type of tires do you suggest. I am bout to have to get some this month. I was thinking about trying out some nitto 555 or some 555r tires. Is my stillen exhaust any good? I have heard mixed things about it as well.
VTS
DO about a month or two worth of reading threads on superchargers and turbo's then make your mind up . Alot of what your asking is been covered time and time again .

tires, eh i dunno
depends on what you want out of a tire
the Nitto 555's are fine
depends on how much usage you need to get out of them and how much it rains etc
can't go all that wrong with BFG KD's or even KDW's, but they probably cost more
for my car, I pretty much am only looking at street legal competetition tires like Nitto NT-01's or NT555 RII's, Yokohama A048's, Pirelli Corsa's etc, but they might not be very ideal for you. I've even considered putting some Kumho V700's or even 710's
(not street legal) on since I never drive my car in the rain at all. Either way, I want a tire that handles well with the most traction possible in the dry
I don't know what wheels you have, but you might consider wider wheels or you can always do some of the really wide tire setups with low profiles on skinnier wheels.

For now, I just have the stock 18" wheels on it. I am going to upgrade those later on as well. But since I have to get tires now, I will have to get some that will go on my stock rims.
yeah you can get away with 255's front and rear with normal ratio sidewalls. Some people have gone wider with shorter sidewalls though
you can use this site if you haven't seen it
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
and dig through tire rack or whatever to get some info.
I'd stay away from people's own personal reviews though on this site unless they're for similar setups to what you'll be running. Everyone typically thinks their tires are the most awesome things. The ratings on tirerack are so-so ok. Not really accurate though since no one has tested every tire.
the benchmarks on tirerack I somewhat trust though
