Like everything learned over the past few years, nobody really knows what the stock VQ35HR is going to be capable of until shops start playing with them... 'Til then, it's all up for debate.

We know that even a stock DE can push 500whp (see GTM's new success story on this), so I don't doubt that we'll see great numbers come out for these engines. The question is whether or not it's going to hold up well past that mark given proper tuning and FI application.

No offense to anyone here, but I think it's too early in the game to be stating any facts.

Not on pump gas. They only got 500 whp on pump according to their website.

And i don't think the increased deck height has anything to do with "head lift". Since the HR rods are the exact same length and the stroke is the same, the logical conclusion is that the compression height on the pistons was increased to promote stability in the bore. This increased piston length is probably to compensate for the reduced skirt area of the new piston design.
It wasn't directed torward either of you guys. SR20 and you both have the correct information.. the other guys are who I was talking to.

As for the head lift I should have said the heads were going to help with that since they are a better design and flow air much better then the DE. The combustion chamber will also be more efficient since they increased the size with could potentially help with any kind of lift.

True.. but with 10:6:1 then 550whp should be possible on pump.. but not at 10PSI (No offense bigbri ) Maybe 12-15PSI.

No. For multiple reasons. The block is taller and wider, and the transmission bolt pattern is different.

In regards to rod length - the new HR's DO have longer rods. FSM > all, but apparently in this case Nissan dropped the ball on proofing the manuals. The rod is 8mm longer, same as the block height increase of 8mm.

I just had an HR rod double checked with a caliper, and it is 152.2 center to center. 8mm longer than the 144.2 VQ3DE rods.

Nissan really got their act together on this motor by changing to a two piece block! In stock form they may just make marginally more power, but the potential for 1000+hp was increased greatly.

Don't you mean block height?

Good. I said in my other thread on maxima.org that the ESM data might be wrong. Now we know for sure.

Good catch - edited.

Also, VQ35DE heads bolt on / work with the VQ35HR.

I agree on waiting. I figure it will take about 2 years for the aftermarket to catch up with the HR. By that time, the next gen Z/G will have come out with a 3.7L HR and most likely a new tranny. That will be the perfect time to start modding an HR IMO.

So I take it that means that HR heads will work on a DE?

Physically bolt on? Yes.
Work? I doubt that. The DE heads will fit behind the HR cover, but I would almost guarantee the HR heads wont fit behind the DE cover - and the HR cover wont fit the DE.
