I felt a huge difference going from stock cats to test pipes. The car ran a a ton stronger with test pipes and a tune. The smell and exhaust note started to bother me a little so I tryed the Ultimate Racing HFC and it feels OK but I miss the power and response of test pipes. I'm installing an X pipe to help the sound department and going back to testpipes.

For those of you that think that cats do nothing for the environment, think again. The "cats" catalyze the following chemical reactions:

Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen: 2NOx → xO2 + N2

Oxidation of (non greenhouse gas, but toxic) carbon monoxide to less harmful (greenhouse gas) carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2

Oxidation of unburnt carcinogenic hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water: 2CxHy + (2x+y/2)O2 → 2xCO2 + yH2O

By the way, "carcinogenic" = "promotes cancer".

are you kidding me???

Only difference i noticed was a 200 degree difference in EGTs... and a slightly faster spool. My butt dyno said 0 hp.

no, it's true. learn something new everyday, huh?

ok, the cancer part is over the top - you'd likely have to live in the fumes for it to have an oncogenic impact on you lungs, but it is carcinogenic.

considering that my apartment building was built on polycholorinated biofluorocarbons and i'm fine, a little raw exhaust fumes won't hurt anything. besides, doesn't CO2 help trees grow?

LOL Actually it will double your risk. Such risks are cumulative. Everyday can you hear the "tick tock", "tick tock". Boom that one cell transforms and... well let's hope you're taking your antioxidants...

And yes exactly to your 2nd point, but you're only producing CO2 if you have cats! Help the trees!

American Cancer Association slogan for 2007 for a cancer free America:
1. Don't smoke tobacco
2. Don't chew tobacco
3. Don't run test pipes

I put my test pipes back on today and the butt dyno is registering a least 30hp. It pulls so much harder now!! Screw the smell, catalytic converters don't belong on turbo cars if you want all the power.

well if you really want "all the power", electronic cut outs would be the best of both worlds

it's like a switchable Y junction before the cats that simply dumps the exhaust straight out to the atmosphere - 0 back pressure. You can choose whether you run through your full exhaust or straight out w/ a switch in the cabin.
